read banned books

2005 BBW logo: It's Your Freedom We're Talking AboutWho knew that this week was America's Banned Books Week... well, I do now, thanks to Jevyeddy and his friend Sugarfoot.

Like Jevyeddy, I'm a book freak (if you've noticed the "Currently Reading" section in the sidebar, you probably could have worked it out for yourself) and it turns out that I've actually read seventeen of The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–2000 (21 if you count the Harry Potter books as five instead of one book).

5. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
6. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
7. Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling
8. Forever by Judy Blume
18. The Color Purple by Alice Walker
22. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
25. In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak
27. The Witches by Roald Dahl
28. The New Joy of Gay Sex by Charles Silverstein
32. Blubber by Judy Blume
33. Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan
60. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
62. Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume
70. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
76. Where Did I Come From? by Peter Mayle
78. Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume
84. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

There are also a couple of books on the list that sound familiar, and I may have read, but I'm not completely sure.

salient facts from today...

Okay... after a whole day of work today, I've realised the following things...
  1. I miss working, being in the city, I even miss "bus surfing", and, strangely enough, I miss having people around (even if its only to have something to winge about).
  2. Boost Juice has a whole new menu I haven't even tried yet... I made a start with the Green Tea Mango Mantra.
  3. The people I'm working for (again... I keep coming back to them) annoy me and amuse me in equal parts.
  4. I found a store that sold the following: Invisible playing cards, decent Egyptian cat statues and little Egyptain god statues for $4.95... I bought Anubis.
  5. The cool shoes I'm thinking about getting haven't arrived in Adelaide yet.
  6. I really miss four out of the six reprobates I used to work with.
  7. Three of those reprobates have or do read my blog... I knew one of them had, but not the other two, I do link back to two of them who have blogs though, so I really shouldn't be surprised.
I think its important to discover new things...

chocolate with raury

Well, that was a different evening than I'd planned...

After I got the message from Raury the other day, I did end up texting him back... and we played SMS tag for a while, he was up at the snow, and said he would touch base when he was in Adelaide. And I was right about him having been sick... pretty sick actually... he has lymphoma... which is never good.

He messaged me tonight asking what I was up to, and since my only plans were to stay in and watch teevee, I ended up going out to meet him for a coffee... which turned out to be a hot chocolate, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Now, the thing about Raury is, he has hair... I don't mean "Gorillas in the Mist fullbody" hairy, but most of the time I've known him he's had a ponytail and a goatee... so it threw me for a loop to pick him up in the car and him to be as bald as a badger... I mean, the full monty... nada. Very, very weird indeed. It took me about five minutes to get past it... just weird...

We went to this little place in one of the sidestreets in the city, called Chocolate Bean (they supposedly have a website, but the URL doesn't work), which serves, among other things, a range of hot chocolates and mochas... I had the Mint Mocha... very, very nice! The cute waiter boy wasn't bad either.

So Raury told me his tale of his ongoing battle with lymphoma, which pretty much made anything I had to add to the conversation much less interesting by comparison... it did make me glad I was wearing my Livestrong bracelet though... not completely sure why... it just did...

It was just like old times really... we talked crap upstairs in this ginchy little cafe, it was all pretty fun... then when we eventually came down and were about to leave, we ended up chatting to the owner girl for ages (Raury is having a vague thing... which is fine, since I saw some photos of her partner, and I'm quite content to split them between us *evil grin*).

The one downside was coming back to the car and finding a pretty little ticket attached to the windscreen wiper...

Stop in Taxi Zone... $48.00

RUDE! Its not even like there were any fricken taxi's IN the zone... just my crappily parked little car.

Raury's here until Sunday, but it sounds like he's pretty booked up, between ongoing scans and medical appointments and catching up with various people... so I probably won't see him again this visit. I need to remember to ask what made him think to message me... I'd meant to ask, but forgot.

So, now its off to bed, since I have a day at work tomorrow... joy of joys... unfortunately, its the place I've worked before that drives me nuts, so that should be fun... not. At least its work though.

totally out of context

1. Delve into your blog archive.
2. Find you 23rd post (or closest to).
3. Find the fifth sentence (or closest to).
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.

I saw this meme first this morning on Jevyeddy's blog... then this afternoon I saw it again on Pipedreams... so I wondered... what was my out of context sentence...

My 23rd post was No Stealth Religion For Me and counting along five sentences I got...

"Arrgggghhhhh.... Stealth Jesus!"

See... funny... Course, part of my problem is that a) I write a lot of really long sentences... and b) I use a LOT of ellipsis... not correctly, but fairly consistantly.

You're supposed to do a fifth step of tagging five people... but I'm not even sure five people read this... so... yeah... If you read this and want to do it... go nuts!

pancrepes

not mine, unfortunatelyFor some unknown reason, I decided last night that making up a batch of pancake batter for this morning would be a plan. Still not sure why... but I did it anyway... figuring that if the recipe said to leave it for at least an hour or two, then leaving it overnight would be even better.

Being from good British stock (and using a recipe from an English cookbook), my pancake batter was the British kind... more like a crepe than the American variation. Even though I've had pancakes just about every Shrove Tuesday, I don't know that I've ever really cooked them. Its not really like pancakes are rocket science though... how wrong can you go with flour, milk, eggs and a little melted butter?

I did screw it up once... many, many moons ago, back when I was still living at home, and a friend was staying with us after his girlfriend kicked him out... we used self-raising flour and the mix was a mess... so we ended up adding more and more flour and some cocoa, and making an only slightly less disastrous cake out of it...

Anyway... no such disasters befell me this time... and although the mix had split a little when I got it out of the fridge this morning, a quick whisk and it was all good.

I was kind of anticipating the whole thing to be a bit of a trainwreck... but all in all it worked out okay... I mangled the first couple, but they always kinda end up that way for whatever reason. I managed to set off my oversensitive smoke detector twice due to smoking butter... but sometimes thinking too hard about smoke sets it off...

Since it was a kind of brunch thing, I ended up eating them all... never good... all full of bloating floury goodness...

The scary thing was, after I was all done, I happened to switch off the video I'd been watching and flick through the teevee channels, and there was Ian "Huey" Hewitson on his cooking show making... you guessed it... crepes! And me with a belly full of pancake... it led to some semi-barfy feelings, let me tell you.

fifty years jimmy dean

image from jamesdean.comThis Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the death of James Dean.

I just finished watching a show called James Dean - Sense Memories on teevee... granted it didn't tell me a lot I didn't already know... I've been a James Dean fan pretty much since I was about 15 or 16... and I've seen and read just about it all... his movies, a couple of biographies, the teevee movie with James Franco... I've even watched a movie because it had his name in the title.

But what was interesting about this Sense Memories show was the whole thing was told by people who knew him. Friends, people who worked with him, people involved in making his movies... they let them tell their own stories... and that was kind of interesting.

What was more interesting than that though was to look at all these old faces as they told their stories... Martin Landau, Eartha Kitt and especially Dean's costar from Rebel, Corey Allen. I mean, Allen was hot back in the day... all fifties hair and leather jacket, but hot... and now... its almost a completely different face looking at you.

And it got me thinking about what might have happened if Dean had lived.... he'd be 74 this year... would he just be another old face? I mean, look at that face... so intense, so timeless... so beautiful. Seeing it changed so with age as to be unrecognisable just doesn't seem possible... even though he did undergo a makeup job to simulate it in Giant... it was still very obviously him underneath it all.

If he hadn't died, then the cult around his image and short career certainly wouldn't have sprung up... and I kind of wonder where he would have gone from there... maybe he would have left movies and taken up auto racing... maybe he would have met the love of his life and been a husband and father... we're never going to know.

Somehow I kind of doubt it... he really was a candle that burned hot and bright... but not for long.

Rest in peace Jimmy... to coin an old phrase... we hardly knew you.

I'm blaming Adam Spencer... I really am...

I got all caught up in this poker show he's hosting on Network Ten last night, Joker Poker (comedians playing cards)... I wouldn't have, but I only learned to play poker earlier this year, and, well... it was comedians... playing poker...

Then, as I was laying in bed, I had a breakthrough about what to buy my friend J for Christmas...

Which led to me waking up with "What ever happened to those nude male playing cards I used to have?" on my brain this morning... and my brain wouldn't shut up until I got up and started looking for them.

Looking through my wardrobe and dresser drawers is scary...

I did find the wig and plastic headstand I bought ages ago when I was considering doing drag for all of five minutes (as "Fawn Ekaytor"... say it out loud)... it was stuffed in a plastic bag at the back of the wardrobe, up the top where I never go. I left it out on my kitchen bench... I need to work out what to do with it...

Then I started looking in my dresser... I found the cards pretty quickly actually... in a box along with about half a ton of bits of paper. Turned out to be a bunch of stuff I used to have on a pinboard... pictures and little sayings and random stuff... was interesting to look through it all, it definately took me back a ways...

I dug out a bunch of the quotes... figured I'd share them...

arty things

Since I was feeling in kind of a "blah" mood... I figured it was as good a time as any to go through my links and see what was no good, clean them up a bit...

This is all because I have this habit of saving links and then never revisiting them... even though I have them all sorted into folders and categories... yeah, I know... I'm semi-anal about sorting stuff... but then I never clean stuff out... its the packrat gene passed on from my Nanna, to my Mum, to me... *sigh*

yaniblog boys via josie's deviko dollmakerBut, having said that, I did clean out a bunch of old/lame/broken links... even if I only managed to do the Art folder...

I did find a bunch of cool stuff though... stuff I'd forgotten about, stuff that got updated without me, stuff like that...

First up are these four cuties, "the yaniblog boys"... okay, I'll admit it... I'm a big girl's blouse when it comes to these pixel doll things... I've never quite had the patience or artistry to so something as detailed as these (although I have dabbled), but that's what Dollmakers are for... in this case, Josie Doll's Deviko Dollmaker. There's also a couple of girly versions at Josie's site. I have to say that I quite like the pixelart graphics she has for navigation... very snazzy.

As for the boys... how cute are they! I was messing around, making a couple of them, and my brain went "boy band!"... so, yeah... they pretty much named themselves after that... especially Kevin (who kinda looks like Kevin from the Backstreet Boys, at least to me)...

zan's my life in blueOkay, changing the subject now, before I turn completely into a 15 year old girl... *sigh*

The next thing I re-found was Zan's My Life in Blue... and it had been updated! YAAAAAY!

I loved Zan's art when I first fell across it via his Elfwood Gallery... all tall skinny fae creatures... what's not to love!

Then I found My Life in Blue... tall skinny fey sarcastic gay creatures... with text! Needless to say I devoured the whole thing from beginning to end... and it ended with huge gaps between the last few posts... and then... nothing...

And finding it again today... new art! Still with months between updates... but new art none-the-less. Colour me very pleased.

I even made a banner button for it (see... on the right there, between Order of the Stick and Chopping Block).

theban band's babylonI never quite know what to make of Theban Band's work... its half photograph, half digital creation... half artwork, half slash porn...

Exibit A - Babylon: Alexander and Hephaistion from Alexander...

Whatever it is, its gorgeous work, lots of lush naked bodies... lots of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean boy on boy action... there's even a little girl on girl action, for those that way inclined.

I'd love to see a "step by step" of one of these pieces, I wouldn't even know where to start creating something like this... even though I've seen some of the original photographs that these are based on... there is so much attention to detail going on that it kind of boggles the mind.

And last, but not least... Ursula's Metal and Magic.

ursula's bad eggUrsula is a twisted soul... which must be why I like her work.

Her "Bad Egg" image that I've used was on the cover of The Advertiser Review a while back for a story about the Adelaide Hill's run company Ballistic Publishing and their book on digital art, EXPOSÉ 3.

I thought it was brilliant, but I don't know if I ever looked at who the artist was, and I definately never connected the dots back to Ursula.

So imagine my surprise when I was wandering around her site, and in amongst the wombats and pink lizards and weird fruit, there was "Bad Egg".

I'm not sure where I originally saw Ursula's work, and hence found her site... it could have been Elfwood again... or VCL (since she does a lot of animal based art)... it could even have been deviantART... who knows...

Okay... that's it... I've been working on this post for like two hours, and its time to stretch and eat something... maybe watch some teevee...

more phone weirdness

Let's just start off by saying, I hate calling people I don't know (even if they're expecting me to call), or not knowing who it is that's calling me. I'm weird, I know this... we can move on now...

So, I got a text message last night, from a number that didn't show up in my phone, but which looked familiar. I figured it had to come from one particular person, and I wasn't sure I wanted to talk to said person. I was still trying to figure out if it was this person when my phone rang.

The same number again. I didn't answer it... and let it go to voicemail.

I know, I know... it was somewhat childish, but m'eh, I figured that at least then I would know who was calling and could work out if I actually did want to talk to them.

I couldn't be bothered checking the message last night, so I did it first thing this morning. And it wasn't who I thought it was at all...

That would have been too easy!

Turns out it was a completely different person who had drifted out of my life some time back, we'll call him Raury.

So now I'm officially confused... WHY is Raury calling me after all this time? What makes him go "Gee, NOW would be the perfect moment to call yaniboy"....

I'd heard through a mutual friend a while ago that he'd been really ill, and had ended up going "country" to stay with his dad. Obviously he's back now.

I just can't work out if I really want him back in my life... I mean its not like I'm crawling with friends and associates, but Raury and I were pretty much superficial friends... we never really talked about what was going on with us, we just kinda coasted along on this amusing, but not overly deep level.

Buggered it I know what to do...

We have drifted in and out of each other's lives before... I used to work with him many, many, many moons ago... and we drifted... then random chance brought me and my housemate to look at renting the house his girlfriend at the time... and he turned up on our doorstep... and he dated my best friend... they broke up... and we drifted... I moved here on my own... he showed up again... we started hanging out on Friday nights after work... he started dating a girl I didn't really like that much... and we drifted... she moved away... we started going out dancing... then after much back and forth, he started dating one of my other best friends... that didn't end well... he started dating this girl with no actual brain to speak of... and we drifted... and here we are now...

Okay, so I'm starting to sense a pattern... obviously he's "without woman" at present. Which, if I'm right (and I would say its probably very likely that I am), kinda makes me "Fallback Plan B"... not overly flattering, I have to say.

So... to call/text him, or not to call/text him... that is the question.

wallace and gromit: the curse of the were-rabbit - something wicked this way hopsYep, tonight's movie was Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit!

I have to say, that while I'm quite fond of Aardman's other full length feature, Chicken Run, I've never really been what you would call a rabid Wallace and Gromit fan.

Until now...

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is just fun... silly, and sometimes a little predictable, but lots and lots of fun. I laughed or chuckled most of the way through, and my Mum laughed even more than me, but whether that was just from the "Englishness" of the whole thing or not, I don't know.

I especially loved some of the little "in-jokes"... a grocers called "Harvey's", a shop called "Rare Bits" and a book on monsters by "Claude Savagely"... plus Lady T's carrot and corn inspired dresses...

And Gromit... he never says a word, but he has some of the best "acting" moments in the movie...

Then there's the bunnies... dawwwww... they're so cuuuuuuute! Its especially worth staying for the parade of anti-grav floating bunnies during the closing credit run. Bunny!

new template

lanterns in federation square 2005Woohoo... colour me so impressed with myself... hehehe.

I decided yesterday that I was bored with my old template and needed to make a new one... but I had no idea what to use... nothing was really saying "this is yani"... then laying in bed last night, I remembered a very cool photo I took in Melbourne (see right) at Federation Square. I have no idea what the place was, I'm guessing some über-chic Asian resturant... all minimalist steel and red lanterns... looked pretty cool from down on the ground though. Hence the photo.

So this morning I went through the process of tweaking both the photo and my existing template into something much cooler... Course I did go a little insane at one point due to a gap that kept showing up, since I couldn't work out why it was there. Got it eventually though, as always with CSS, it was one simple little adjustment.

And I give you... yani.redlantern!

six songs i'm currently digging

I've seen this meme on other people's blogs, and since then I've been thinking to myself, "What five songs are currently top of my personal list?"...

Then the Universe decided to let Rage show three of the ones I really like back to back... so I figured that was a sign of some kind...

Although, thinking about it, I think there's six rather than five.... So, here goes...
  1. Teardrop - Massive Attack (the theme from House)
  2. Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
  3. Shot You Down - Audio Bullys
  4. You're Beautiful - James Blunt
  5. Bad Day - Daniel Powter
  6. These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Jessica Simpson
Yeah, I know... I'm not proud of the last one either... but I like the original Nancy Sinatra version...

The last three are the ones that the Universe sent me back to back... and with 4 and 5, I just can't decide whether its actually the song I'm digging, or the videos for them.

thoughts on j

glen hanson's skyIn five days and *checks clock* 49 minutes J, my best friend on the planet, celebrates his 21st Birthday... and he celebrates it on the other side of the planet in London.

There are a couple of quotes about friendship that kind of relate really well to him and me...

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail. But a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "That was frickin' awesome."

A friend will help you move house, but a real friend will help you move the body.

And in the case of J and myself, we also kind of know where all the other bodies are buried.

Its weird... he's the kind of person who I adore and who annoys me in pretty much equal quantities. But we get each other... and we have, pretty much since day one. It was one of those high octane, very intense, must-know-everything-about-you-right-this-second type beginnings, but its a relationship where we're both pupil and teacher at any given moment, and that's held us in pretty good stead overall.

Our relationship can be very cerebral and metaphysical but at the same time its equally juvenile and purile... its a good mix.

He's also the only person I know that its fairly likely that having a conversation with him will require the use of a dictionary at some stage. I use big words sometimes, he wants to know what they mean, I like to give him the actual definitions.

And now he's in London...

And its about to be his birthday...

And I'm broke and on the other side of the planet... so I can't even send him anything.

So I'm doing my usual trick, finding either porn or artwork, or both and making him up a cybercard of my own... although I just realise I need to change the message, make it a bit more personal and the way I write normal greeting cards...

*fiddles with the card*

There... much better.

Hopefully he's going to be back at Christmas, coz there's nothing quite like sitting around talking crap with him. Or watching Iron Chef, drinking beer and scarfing down pizza. Or doing impromptu photoshoots at 3am in the basement carpark of my local supermarket. Or having him show up at my door with a tree branch and a handful of sandpaper so we could craft me a walking stick/staff. Or going to see all three Matrix movies back to back to back. Or laughing maniacally through another episode of Mythbusters as Adam and Jamie blow up more stuff...

I miss ya J...

camera club time again

september's entriesYep, that time of the month again... time for the monthly Camera Club competition...

And this month I did a lot better than last month, which is always a bonus. Granted, this month the judge still had all his own teeth and most of his original hair colour...

I only entered the "Open" section of the comp, since the "Set Subject" was Tools of the Trade and I didn't have a single thing for it... although afterwards I did wonder about the naughty things I could have entered under heading such as Porn Star's Tool and other suggestive titles. But I only thought about it when I was already at the club, so... nevermind.

But my scores, a 9 and two 8's, wasn't bad. Dryad (bottom left) got the 9, while Golden (top right) and Stretch (bottom center) scored the 8's. The judge also made some actually useful comments about both the latter two images, so I may have to re-edit them and see if he was right.

Both Couch (top left) and Kitchen (bottom right) were a little too "blatent" for the judge, as I kind of expected they might be, given the general overall age of our judges, but I wasn't too put out... even though they both got a 6, I can resubmit them in another contest, so back into the "To Be Entered" folder they go.

Although this judge was a little too focused on the "saleability" of some of the images, that being his actual day job, working in a photographic store, I can't complain too much, and I'm actually pretty pleased with my overall scores.

Next month's contest is one of our "special" comps, all portraiture, which is kinda my thing, so I'll have to look through my stuff and see what I have. Unfortunately with the special comps, its a reduced number of shots, so I can only pick out 3 images. We'll see...

I'm also kind of excited about the special November 29 comp, since its a unique one, being "Digitally Projected Images", which means I can submit a bunch of stuff I've tweaked around in Photoshop, but never been able to sumbit to the club due to its size or quality or whatever. I already have 1 shot picked out, one that I worked my brains out on, but did it at a small size. Then I have to find 2 others. Not sure what they're going to be yet, but picking them out should be fun.

After that its only a hop, skip and a jump to the Annual Exhibition... got the entry form for that too tonight... so I have to make some choices about what I put in there too. Course, I don't know what anything will quite equal my first Annual Exhibition, where I took out, not only the Top Monochrome Print, but also the brand new category of Top Classic Portrait.

Now, that was a fun night.

And now I kinda feel like I'm bragging... hehehe.

hair adventures

not me but cuteDa-da-da-daaaaaa... new hair!

I've been having that "hair too long... all bad" thing going on for about a week now, and today I made it all better.

Took two hours in the salon, but its done.

Nice and short, spikey and whatnot, same as always... and a new colour.

I kinda gave Tink, my hairdresser, some grief over the colour... a long long long time ago I had this straight colour put in and it looked really natural and I really liked it... but stuffed if I can remember exactly what it was. Tink ended up going down into their basement to go through the old "styling cards" to work out what it was, but she couldn't find it (the card, not the colour).

So we guessed... she ended up making it half 8W and half 11W (6% with a dash of 9%)... which will probably mean more to all you hairdressers out there than it does to me, but at least now I have a record of it. Its not a bad colour... if I'd had already bought my digital camera I would have taken a shot of it, but alas, no camera, so no hair colour pic.

Its kinda goldey-blonde... a tiny touch red, but my hair "throws red" in most colours. I'm thinking next time we just go for the full 8W, since that was the darker shade, but for the time being its pretty good.

Sitting there trying to work out what colour I wanted it was kind of entertaining, since it just brought back all these memories of previous haircolours, etc... especially since I've been going there since about 1995... on and off, but yeah, 10 years... scary...
