penis name...

I figured this was appropriate for two reasons... the first being that today is Elvis Presley's birthday... and secondly, that, for a very short while about seven or eight years ago, I did actually "name" it this.... although it was more in an "Elvis has left the building" kind of way... okay, forget I mentioned it...

coffee with potential model

On my 2006 Wish List, number 8 was "To return to growing and developing my photography"... so I've been going through my database of people I've spoken to about modelling for me, sending off a few messages here and there, chatting to people, trying to kick things back into gear.

I did this last year too, and got three or four shoots out of it before general lethargy and the onset of Autumn kind of kicked in. I'm hoping to do better this year, we'll see though.

To that end, I just came back from a "coffee meeting" (not that I had coffee... it's too hot, so I had that flavoured mineral water stuff... but he had coffee) with a potential model... we'll call him "Will". I like to do that kind of public meeting, it lets them meet me and me meet them, and just generally get a feel for what they're like and they can ask whatever questions they like. I should trust my instincts on those meetings though, because there have been a few where my brain just screamed "run away" and I went ahead and did the shoot, and it just wasn't worth it, for whatever reason. I'm not always right, but it's generally a good rule of thumb.

Not today's meeting though... today was a good meeting!

It always differs, sometimes the meeting lasts about ten or fifteen minutes (generally those are the ones where I should probably run away screaming), sometimes around an hour, but I pretty much come up with some variation on the same spiel every time... hey, it's tried and tested material, I'm not about to deviate from it... plus it all happens to be true.

My meeting with Will today lasted for about an hour, he seems enthusiastic, and has some ideas both for what he wants and possible locations... it's always good when the model has ideas, I get stuck after a while trying to art direct all on my own.

Will is possibly a little older than I would normally choose to photograph... I think he's 38 or so, but he looks pretty good for his age, except for some lines around his eyes. He seems like a nice guy, and the shoot should be fun... he wants to hit the gym, eat right, all that stuff, before we do the shoot, which is understandable, so it probably won't be for a month... but it's a start...

I just need to drum up some other models in the meantime...

If only Adelaide wasn't such a small place...

hot water!

this would be me... if i looked like that... and hadn't already had a showerHot water!

I have hot water!

It's been two weeks since my hot water stopped working, and you have NO idea how glad I am that it's back!

Of course, because nothing is ever simple, the plumber does have to come back, something about the flame being too high and they can't regulate it with the controls on the heater... but I don't care, so long as it holds out until he comes back... I have hot water...

*does the 'I Have Hot Water' dance*

random shuttersnipe hotness

Another photographer of the male body for this week's Random Hotness, this time, David Fleming. Like me, David seems to be an "amateur" photographer (I use the term in quotes because there is nothing amateur about his work, just that he does it for fun rather than as a profession).

I found David through a post on The Daily Drool and was pretty impressed by his stuff. He has a stack of galleries of individual models on the site...Kieran and Dustin, who I used here are just two of them, but there's a ton more, including filthygorgeous blogstar Rico!

hottest 100

triple j hottest 100As I keep hearing every morning on my walk, it's that time again for the Triple J Hottest 100...

Since it began in 1988, the Hottest 100 has become an Australian cultural institution. It reflects back to the nation exactly which songs captured the enthusiasm of music lovers in the past year. We got over 470,000 online votes in January 2005.

I actually haven't voted in a Hottest 100 for several years, not since 1998, but I do own the 1996, 1997 and 1998 Hottest 100 CDs... but I figured, since I'm listening to the J's again, I may as well have a crack...

I always get stuck trying to work out what to vote for though (partly because I never remember song titles and partly because Triple J plays lots of stuff you never hear anywhere else), and this year is slightly more complicated, since you are allowed to choose 10 songs, rather than just one as in previous years. There was really only one given, and that was Middle Of The Hill by Josh Pyke... for obvious reasons! In the end I just sat here and went through the alphabetical song list one letter at a time, and in the end came up with my selection for the Hottest 100...

Catch My Disease - Ben Lee
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo - Bloodhound Gang
Gold Digger - Kanye West
Hoodie - Lady Sovereign
I'm A Rabbit I'm A Fox - Laura Jean
Middle Of The Hill - Josh Pyke
Shot You Down - Audio Bullys
The Car Song - Cat Empire
Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix) - Prodigy

Now all I have to do is wait for Australia Day to find out what the top songs are...

movies: chicken little

chicken little - when it comes to saving the world, it helps to be a little chickenWhat do you do when you've seen all the good movies that are out?

You scrape the bottom of the barrel...

This was how we wound up at Chicken Little tonight.

I kind of expected it to pretty much suck... and it did exceed my expectations, it didn't suck anywhere near as much as I thought it was going to.

But if this was supposed to be Disney's big foray into CG Animation, Pixar have NOTHING to worry about... the CG was pretty good throughout (even if they did get a little lazy with certain background characters and just repeat multiple versions), but the story... well, what there was of it... was pretty much all over the place, and very, very light on... when it wasn't trying to be overly sappy.

Thankfully at only 81 minutes you don't really get a chance to be that worried that its all fluff.

I'm kinda sweet on Zach Braff anyway, and his voice as Chicken Little was just right, that real geeky edge he has... but seriously, the star of the show was Fish Out of Water (the "voice" of whom was performed by one of the editors vocalising through a tube into a water cooler tank full of water)... he stole just about every scene he was in, and was very, very similar to South Park's Kenny (who happens to be my favourite character in that show too)... they're both orange, they both have their heads covered in things that makes it impossible to understand them, they can both be understood by other characters but not the audience, they're both pretty much ahead of the rest of the characters and they're both slightly cocky. The scene in the school gymnasium where Fish gets bored and starts doing origami just cracked me up.

All in all though, it's as light on laughs as it is on story. Most of the good stuff was included in the trailer, so I'd already seen all those jokes way too many times. The last five minutes or so was probably the funniest part of the movie (Fish and his origami notwithstanding).

montage monday: strangeways

strangeways 2005My first Monday Montage for the year... I promised to do a montage of the "Green Leg" of my walk (which is actually called Strangeways Terrace, hence the title of the post) way back at the end of November, and was kind of working on it from then on... I finshed it just before Christmas, but with Christmas posts and whatnot, this is the earliest I could post it.

The photo dead center is the front of the apartment building I used to live in (which I mentioned back in the November post), and the shot right above it is part of the name of the building.

I have one more montage still to come, and then after that I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do for my next one... I'm thinking "Green" but I don't know yet.

yaniboy template

yaniface 2005Okay, so this image isn't new... I started using it as my Blogger profile image back in November... but I already had a template in use then, and then I had to do a Christmas template... so the templatey version of this one had to wait...

Yes, the image has been manipulated to within an inch of it's tiny life... but yes, my eye does mostly look like that... all I did was some selected dodging to the iris in Photoshop.

Add a little sepia colouring for my skin (which looked very washed out in the original), and I'm done...

Interestingly when I sent the image to my friend J, his first comment was "funky pic... he's old..." followed about a minute later with... "shit, is that you?" He's such a complimentary little troll... *grin*.

I give you... yani.blueeye

happy new year 2006

happy 2006 (hamish, girl, david, girl and adam)Photo from the front page of yesterday's Advertiser

Happy New Year Everyone!

And how did I ring in the New Year? With an evening of Little Shop of Horrors followed by 28 Days Later (which now means I have an even bigger crush on Cillian Murphy than I did after Batman Begins.... mmmm naked Cillian) and a glass of Coopers Pale Ale mixed with Sprite and Bickford's Lime!

I paused the movie just before midnight and let the talentless wonders on teevee count me down to midnight, but unlike last year, when the moment came I didn't hear the fireworks in town (like I did last year), or anything really... there was a car that drove past my place just on midnight, and I couldn't help thinking that was a crappy place to be at the stroke of midnight. Then I finished my glass of beer and went back to British rage zombies...
