movies: wanted

wanted - choose your destinyYou know those movies that are so very bad that they're actually kinda good... yeah... Wanted is more or less one of those...

Although, really... any movie with James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie gets points from me before it even starts... I mean, what's not to love! Because if I can have a thing about Mr McAvoy when he's wearing horns and fuzzy britches, having a thing for him when he's (eventually) all bad-ass assassin boy (with those big beautiful blue eyes) wasn't at all hard...

It's not the greatest movie ever made however... the beginning and end are probably the best parts... and the "training montage" is pretty good (as these things go... I mean there's only so many different ways you can put one of those puppies together)... but there are some uneven bits and pieces of plot along the way... I mean putting aside the whole "defying the laws of physics" bullet thing (which I could quite happily let slide, with the exception of one sequence at the end), there's a whole sequence with a train where you just go "oh please"...

There is also a certain plot element that telegraphs itself at one point and you spend the rest of the movie just waiting for it to happen... which, fortunately, it does...

And for somebody who's name is "above the title", I think Angelina has maybe a dozen or so lines... but if I'm being honest, I couldn't have cared less... all she had to do was stand around with too many tattoos and smokey eye makeup, shoot guns and be all Angelina... shallow, but true.

I will say that the movie has possibly one of the best final lines of recent memory (actually I can't think of a better final line in a movie at all)...

So lame, but, you know, entertainingly and amusingly lame...

waterhouse and sala-ness

waterhouse art prizeWell, a little bit like a year ago... today was more or less all about the art...

Although, for whatever reasons, maybe a less successful day as it wore on than last year...

After our usual Random Supermarket Adventures™, where I wasn't accosted by strange men again thankfully, we headed off in search of The Art...

First stop was some poxy little exhibition at somewhere in Prospect because the artist was somebody that Ma knows... or somebody that somebody that Ma knows knows... or something. Supposedly he's a priest... if he is a priest, he's one of those "priests"... because while Ma kept trying to tell me it was all about "classicism", to me it was all about doodle and spray painted tacky ornaments from Cheap As Chips... seriously, at least a couple of the things glued to a whole bunch of other things were actually tacky ornaments from somewhere that had been painted gold... and there were far to many male images going on too. Oh, and he'd done really bad versions of a montage too... really bad...

And that's before I even mention the "centerpiece" with two GI Joe dolls (I'm guessing, they were poseable male dolls anyway, like Ken but with moving limbs) spray painted gold and seeming to "do it Greek style"... "classicism" my ass...

Anyway, next up, we headed into town and the Museum for the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize... which was maybe a little different from last year, if only because there were actually a bunch more things I really liked this time around...

The image up on the right contains just some of the faves... and mostly they're not even the full shot, just enough to give you a taste... but once again I included the two images Ma and I chose as the People's Choice Winner... and I have to say that it seemed a LOT harder to pick something this year. From the top, we have Tasmanian Wedgetail Eagle by Daniel Byron Szczerba (Ma's pick of People's Choice), Dreaming of Water - Murray Mandala by Janine Mackintosh, Dancer of the Deep by Mill Mackay, I Pass Unhindered by Jason Cordero (my People's Choice pick) and Dance of Seduction - Lyrebird by Glenys Buzza...

Actually both Ma and I were going backwards and forwards on our choices... we both really loved the Wedgetail Eagle, the photo REALLY doesn't do it justice, it was so very touchable (which was annoying because there was a "Do Not Touch" sign on it), and if Ma had gone with her other choice I was going to go with the Eagle... but I also really liked the Unhindered piece... again, the photo doesn't do it justice, it was massive and really gorgeous... as was the Mandala... what you can't tell from the photo is that it's actually individual leaves... it's not a painting, the artist sat down and sewed every single leaf into position... stunning!

But I could go on and on and on for ages... so I won't... except to say that painting a giant canvas sky blue and then entering it into a competition does not make it art... neither does charging $1800 for it... especially when it was "created" by two people... how does that need two people... seriously???

Our next stop was the Art Gallery, since they supposedly had a SALA exhibit on too... which was pretty much a waste of time, since it didn't seem to be a lot of stuff that we hadn't seen before...

Then, like last year, we headed over to Adelaide Arcade to look at their stuff... which actually seemed to be much less interesting than last year... or else there was just less of it... or else, you know, there was less of it AND it was less interesting... but we still wandered around and looked at everything anyway...

And that was about it really... we wandered around town for a little bit longer, than went back to the car and kinda drove around aimlessly for a bit... partly because we were both hungry and the weather was all questionable and neither of us really wanted to walk around much more... actually I think we both just needed a proverbial cookie... instead of driving miles away we ended up going to a "Drive-Thru" pie shop... I kid you not... I'm pretty sure the place used to be a Hungry Jacks (Burger King) or something, and it still has the drive thru window... but instead of closing it up, they decided to open a drive thru pie shop... it's just WRONG I tells ya!

Unsurprisingly, we didn't "drive thru"... we went into the store. I'd just like to know who told the woman behind the counter she could cut my Custard Berliner in half... what's up with that?

That was about it though... we stopped off briefly at Arndale on the way home, did our usual thing of looking at too many DVDs...

So not a thrilling day, but not bad...

photo friday: golden hamster

golden hamsterCan I let you in on a little secret?

No, no... it's not about the golden hamster (which I know is more yellow than gold, but yellow hamster doesn't have the same ring to it)... it's the fact that I've been going more than a little stir crazy this week, and I'm not completely sure why...

And I don't really want to think about it too much in case the feeling comes back again...

I took myself out for a walk earlier, ostensibly to go to the supermarket to buy icecream (I'm having the craving again)... but took my camera out with me and snapped a few photos around the place... stuff I can't really photograph in the mornings because of low light... and just randomly wandered up and down a few streets. Turned out the supermarket didn't have the icecream I wanted (bastards), so it ended up being something of a pointless errand...

random olympic hotness

Given my little rant on Monday, today's Random Hotness is about as "Olympic" as I'm going to get...

And that's only because it's as much about underwear as it is about an Olympic athlete... in this case, 21 year old swimmer, Eamon Sullivan, who has probably had more press coverage about his failed relationship and this shoot for Davenport underwear (which is where these shots come from, obviously) than about his swimming...

Which is kind of sad, but about par for the course really...

I'm not really sure about the jumping though...

morning thoughts

There really isn't a whole lot going on in my brain just currently... probably because there's not a whole lot going on in my life... plus on top of that the weather is all grey and rainy and decidedly "indoors"... which is fine, but maybe a little much after a while.

This morning's walk was slightly more interesting than usual, if for no other reason than the fact that the Corporate Cup started again... so every other Wednesday from now until December I'll be sharing the track around the river with a bunch of "also rans" (okay, I'm sure there was probably a better term I could of used, but that seemed appropriate, if not accurate)... which isn't too bad actually since a fair proportion of them are worth watching as they run on past me. Sadly my clockwise/anticlockwise schedule is such that I'm walking in the same direction as most of them, which kinda cuts down on the perving time, but I'll live...

I was kinda struck by something this morning though... and that was my interpretation of people's preparedness for this thing from their outfits... mainly it was the guys (since, honestly, I don't really pay that much attention to the women), but the difference between the guys kitted out with Skins gear (which I see a fair bit at the best of times anyway) and running shorts and whatnot verses a few guys who just looked like they'd rolled out of bed and put whatever pair of shorts and teeshirt on that they happened to find... and let's not even talk about older guys running in black socks and shorts... it's just wrong...

But I guess I can't really throw that many stones... when I started this whole thing way back when, I went out wearing jeans...

benzo grey

benzo squarebenzo moneyI get the feeling it's going to be more of a visual week this week... but what would a Street Art Safari be without some Benzo action...

I snapped these ones outside the Toy Soldier's gallery... interestingly I already had a full version of the square design, Benzo has used it as a business card, and I picked one up when we were in the gallery... but the same design showed up on stickers around the place while we were on the Safari.

The Asian money-face is pretty damn groovy too... partly because he's used the design on the note as part of the face (which is why it's upside down)... if I spot one of those somewhere else I might have to see if I can lever it off the wall...

montage monday: sala walk

sala street art walkOkay, so it's completely unsurprising... Photo safari on Saturday, so when Monday rolls around, there's a Montage... but since the last one was in May, and the one before that was the end of March, I think we're about due...

Whether we're also due for me to rabbit on about nothing much in particular... well, yeah, probably...
  • I keep forgetting to mention this, but I adore the new Lynx Dark Temptation... actually I adore how I smell once the fragrance has warmed up on my body... a little bit spicy, a little bit chocolatey, very yummy... I'm also amused by the tag line on the back of the can... "Chocolate Fragranced Bodyspray. Do Not Eat."
  • I just need to dork out for a second... I LOVE DOCTOR WHO! Okay, better now... I did realise last night that one of the "TV Moments You Still Remember" I should have added to the Teevee Meme was Rose's exit in the second season finale...
  • The Olympics don't start until Friday, but I'm sick of them already... I'm sick of the crap commercials, I'm sick of having to put up with having wall to wall coverage once they start... and most of all, I'm sick of China... whoever decided that China with their crap human rights policies, restricted internet and a cloud of smog hanging over the city would be a good place to hold the Olympics needs a good hard 2x4 to the back of the head...
  • Speaking of both teevee shows and the Olympics, I wish I knew what the hell the networks were playing at just currently... both So You Think You Can Dance and America's Next Top Model are on Ten, which is awesome, but both shows are on "speeded up" schedules... we have two episodes of ANTM and this week alone there is going to be over FIVE HOURS of SYTYCD... which would make sense if it was an hour a night, but no... it's two hours, then an hour, then two and a half hours... what the? And Seven isn't any better... why the hell would they bother putting on two hours of Heroes the week before the Olympics start???
  • Oh, and I'm also annoyed with the ABC, who've dumped Grand Designs at 8:30 on Tuesday night instead of returning it to 6pm Thursdays like they should have... grrr...
Yeah, I know... it's all just proof that I need to get out more...
