waitin for the change

this photo doesn't have anything to do with anything other than me imagining how cool he probably feelsThe change, she is a comin'... kinda... a bit... I think...

Oy vey... roll on the cool change. I think it's coming along as we speak, but then it's going to be the problem of trying to get the cool outside air in and the hot inside air out... we'll get there though...

Like last weekend, we spent the majority of today going from place to place attempting to stay as cool as humanly possible for as long as possible...

Oddly enough though, except for the usual Supermarket Safari this morning, everywhere else we went was hotter than I would have expected. Whether it was because their aircon systems weren't coping with the heat, or they'd really heated up overnight and the aircon couldn't cope, or what I don't know... but it was definitely not what I was looking forward to.

So yeah... Supermarket Safari went about the same as usual... except that we were a little bit earlier than usual, and for some reason (the heat, obviously) there were 1800 old people all up in my space the whole time... grrr... but we made it out of there without me having to fold any old ladies up and cram them into their trolleys... and any day where that doesn't have to happen is a good day!

Then after a rather sweaty Unpacking, we got in my lovely, lovely airconditioned car (oh how I love thee) and trundled off down to Marion, to seek shelter in the airconditioned bosom of shopping related airconditioned goodness...

But alas, I've already spoiled the end of the story, and that was not to be. It's not to say that there was NO aircon, but it wasn't that instant rush of "ahhhhhhhhh" you get when you walk from the manky exterior air to the sweet, cool interior... it was more like "ahhhhh... eh, what?".

It was almost like the main mall aircons were only working at about half power, and most of the cool air was being blown out by various shops who were on a different system. Weirdness...

Anyway, we did the usual circular shuffle around Marion, went into the store where we bought Ma's parasol... because I picked one that we hadn't opened and closed half a million times, naturally, the one I did pick up won't actually open and close when it gets hot... typical. The funny thing though was that the chick we spoke to in the store (we didn't take the parasol with us, but we figured we could go and ask about the whole return thing since we were there) not only remembered us, but actually remembered the colour of parasol we bought... which I could chalk up to them not having sold a hell of a lot of them, but I think somehow it was probably because she caught the Ma and Yani Travelling Show... hehehe...

After Marion we toddled off to Ikea in search of more airconditioned time wastage... and, obviously, less of it was to be found. I kind of understand it there, they don't have an actual ceiling, and the building is coated in a tin shell (or is tin, I dunno), but it still wasn't so pleasant.

Oh, and I went into the parking lot from a different direction (on purpose), but it also involved heading "into" the airport, but I took the wrong lane and ended up in front of the parking boom gates, so I had to drive the wrong way down this bit of road and then take the long way back... all very stressful and stupid...

We did the usual wander in the Land of the Hurgengurgen (I made that up, obviously, although it wouldn't surprise me if that was an actual Ikea product)... I ummed and ahhhed about the chair I kinda like (again), we bought some stuff we probably didn't really need (that's the whole point of Ikea, though, right?) and then wandered out to face the world.

Fortunately there was some air movement when we came out, and some more when we got back here, which is why I opened the house up... but I'm still sitting here sweating like a piglet (partially because I only have one fan with me, partially because I'm in the bedroom)... but there is the occasional cool gust from places other than my cooler...

Roll on tomorrow, that's what I say!

photo friday: sunflower

sunflowerYou know, until I took these shots yesterday I never realised that sunflowers are really just massively overgrown daisies...

It was kinda weird actually... I spotted these things at the beginning of the week while I was on my walk, but I have no idea how the hell I didn't see them before that. I mean maybe it was too early in the morning the week before and I wasn't paying attention, but they just seemed to appear out of nowhere.

Pretty as all hell though... maybe because they're so tall and so big, or they're just so yellow and perky... but once I'd seen them in "the flesh" I realised that sunflowers are probably one of my favourite flowers.

They're also kind of appropriate right at the moment, with the excess of sun we've been having (see, look at that, flawless segue there *rolls eyes*)... and naturally the heat couldn't just fizzle away, we had to go out with a bang... cue two days of over 40°C before the change appears tomorrow evening. And of course that comes with a 32°C overnight low tonight...

Actually I can't complain too much (well, I can, but nobody listens), I popped outside very briefly earlier to get my mail and it's filthy outside, but it's actually not bad in my place... I managed to suck just enough cool air in the last few days to give myself a fighting chance. It's going to be tonight and tomorrow that are worse though (although large chunks of tomorrow will be spent sucking up as much cool air in shopping malls and related structures as humanly possible)... but hopefully the change will have started rolling in by this time tomorrow.

Of course part of my problem tonight will be what the hell to have for dinner... I'm fed up to the backteeth with salads, but a) it's too hot for much else and b) I don't have a whole hell of a lot left in the house. But just wait until next week... temperatures in the mid 20's, time on my hands... I'll be cooking up a freakin storm! I'd go and get take-out, but that would mean I'd have to leave the house...

Honestly, I'm just bored out of my mind...

Today's Random Hotness proves that even "the boy who never grew up" has to grow up sometime...

Back in 2003 Jeremy Sumpter starred as the title character in the remake of Peter Pan... and he was just as cute as a button, but I knew that in a few years time he was going to be a knockout. Well today is his 20th birthday, and just look at him now!

Also, I love that watch!

big pink meme of gayness

pride flag manOkay... this is actually a combination of a meme that I've had lurking in my drafts folder for ages and something I found earlier today...
  1. Which of the names in the LGBTQQ rainbow best describes your own orientation?
  2. Plain old everyday "gay"...

  3. Are you sure of your sexual orientation?
  4. Oh yeah... I've never questioned it.

  5. When and how did you realize you were gay?
  6. I never actually had the big "realisation" moment... I've always been gay, even before I had a word for it.

  7. Are you open with your sexuality?
  8. Pretty much... I mean I don't try and hide it, but I don't go around wearing a teeshirt that says "I love cock" in giant letters either.

  9. What is your first recollection of gayness in any form?
  10. The one image that always keeps coming back to me is standing in McDonalds when I was maybe in my early teens and seeing the two guys in front of us standing really close together, and then one put his hand in the other one's back pocket.

  11. Who is the first gay person you ever met?
  12. That would be Genevieve, a friend of my aunt... at least she was the first openly gay person I knew personally.

  13. Who was the first person you told that you were gay?
  14. That would be Peter... but I'd been going down on him for months, so I think maybe he already knew.

  15. How's the family feel about it all?
  16. Well, my family is pretty much small and broken anyway... and I know Ma is fine about it... everybody else can go take a flying leap as far as I'm concerned.

  17. Did anyone stop having contact with you after you came out of the closet?
  18. Not as a direct result... as far as I know anyway... sure people drifted out of my life, but whether that had anything to do with it or not I don't know (and if it did, then that's their problem not mine).

  19. Do you have any stories about homophobia you've experienced?
  20. Nothing recent or terribly interesting, no...

  21. Do you have more gay friends than you do straight friends?
  22. M'eh... probably about the same...

  23. What type of guys are you most attracted to?
  24. Honestly... I like 'em cute and kinda twinky, but also sweet, dorky and maybe a little bit nerdtastic...

  25. Do you have a crush on a male celebrity?
  26. Well, several ongoing ones, but nobody that really leaps ahead of the pack...

  27. Who is your favourite famous gay man?
  28. Stephen Fry

  29. What is your favorite gay movie?
  30. I hate having to pick just one of anything... but for purely sentimental reasons (it being the first gay movie I ever saw and all) I'd have to say Torch Song Trilogy.

  31. Do you go to gay clubs?
  32. Nope, not in a long time.

  33. Would you ever be a drag queen (if you're not already)?
  34. Maybe, but probably not... I might do it properly once (provided I could find somebody to do my makeup in that very draggy way and loan me a dress/wig), just to see what it was like.

  35. What name would you go by if you did do drag?
  36. This one I have thought about... Fawn Ehkaytor (or Fawn E Kaytor... it's more about how it sounds when you say it out-loud than how you spell it)...

  37. Do you own anything with the "Pride Rainbow" on it?
  38. Ummmm... well, I have a rainbow sticker (not sure if it's technically a proper "Pride" one though) on a spaghetti jar...

  39. Do you have any gay-themed tattoos? If not, would you ever get one?
  40. No, I only have the one tattoo currently and it's not gay themed... and I can't see myself getting a gay themed one...

  41. Favourite thing about being gay?
  42. Having sex with the mens... what can I say... I love the cock...

blue elephant fox and duckOkay... I'm bored...

I've officially been "unemployed" for two days, and already I'm bored with it.

I think part of the problem is that it's too hot (still... roll on Sunday and the cool change) to really do anything. And it's even kinda too hot to do nothing at all. So I'm bored.

Which also means that I'm out of ideas for blogging, because I haven't done anything.

And either the Mortein Fly Killer spray that I have doesn't do a damn thing or there is some sort of mutant, spray resistant fly in my apartment, because I swear I've sprayed the thing about a dozen times and it just won't die. It also won't leave my feet alone first thing in the morning and early in the evening. Stoopid foot fetish fly...

See, that's how bored I am... I'm blogging about a fly for fucksake...

unconscious mutterings 314

An slightly out of kilter morning... it was actually light when I went out for my walk... and it was cloudy, and just humid enough to be annoying. Then it appears that the council has decided in their infinite wisdom to change our garbage day from Tuesday to Monday without telling anyone (or, you know, me... and the information on their website still says Tuesday), which is fine, but annoying. But mostly it feels weird because my brain is telling me that I should have walked through the door at work about 45 minutes ago...

overheated sunday

california boy - mel robertsOkay, so it should be no surprise by now that it's bloody buggery hot here in good old Adelaide... and that since I don't have any kind of refrigerated air-conditioning, I am now, and have been for the last week, at varying degrees of overheatedness...

However it doesn't explain why my apartment just refuses to take a cool breeze in.

Last night once the sun went down it got quite windy and deliciously cool outside... I'd opened the house up at about 6pm and had the fan in the doorway (as always)... but the cool stayed out there and the hot stayed in here. Rudeness!

And it's not like the house was only open for a couple of hours, I ended up watching the final two episodes of Cycle 8 of America's Next Top Model (thank god the insane Russian chick DIDN'T win... but really, she should have been kicked out in week one) at the new and insane timeslot of quarter to midnight... which of course meant that I was up until about 2am... and there was wind, there were curtains blowing, the whole deal... but my house wasn't particularly cooler. Slightly, yes... but I would have expected a whole lot more.

I know that my place, being all 60's double-brickness takes a while to heat up to this insane level, and consequently takes an equal amount of time before it cools down again, but I would have thought that the lounge room would have been okay, even if the bedroom remained reminiscent of a clay oven (the walls were still very warm to the touch at midnight).

Part of me did consider going off to the sauna today... not for the very hot steam rooms obviously, but for the aircon and the running around fairly naked and the pool (okay, mostly the pool)... but I currently have no libido, so there really wasn't much point.

My computer also hasn't been coping all that well with the heat... it's a combination of things... partially because the computer is in the bedroom and the bedroom is by far the hottest room, so the little fans have trouble cooling things down when all they have to work with is hot air. Added to that is the fact that the heatsink hasn't been cleaned since J was here last January...

So this morning I figured that I would take the dust bunny by the ears as they say, pull the cover off the PC and take a poke around inside. Good in theory, not so great in practice. I mean, obviously I didn't blow anything up, because I'm typing this right now... and yes, I did manage to remove some of the tiny wee dust bunnies living in the heatsink... but I remember last time that J took the heatsink all the way out of the computer (I think he actually washed it to be honest). And while I got the little fan off the top of it no problems, I poked and I prodded and I pulled and I pushed... but there's a big metal strap across the heatsink holding it in place, and I could not for the life of me work out how to undo it.

In the end I just blew on it a few times, wiped as many bunnies as I could out of the machine, screw the case back on and called it a day. Stoopid J living on the other stoopid side of the stoopid planet! When he eventually comes back again I'll have to get him to show me how it's done...

On the upside, although the computer is probably on the far side of "appropriately warm", I've had it on pretty much all day (which I haven't done for the last week or so) and it isn't making that "working too hard" wheezing noise it had been making.

Okay now that I'm thinking about it maybe the house did cool down a touch, at least this morning (the sun is currently hitting the bedroom wall, and that never ends well)... I switched the evaporative cooler off so I could hear the computer fan once I'd plugged everything back in and turned it on... and then forgot it wasn't on, so it couldn't have been THAT hot.

OH YES! I just this second checked the Bureau of Meteorology website (bless you BOM)... while the forecast for next week isn't stellar (high 30's all week, although it's dropping about a degree each day... even if the likelihood of it sticking to that is slim to none)... next Saturday is supposed to be 30°C... but even better... next Sunday, 25°C... WOOHOO!

Now if only this coming week had been my last week at work rather than the week just gone... *sigh*... but at least now there's an end in sight, I always cope better knowing that I can see the finish line on something like this.

Speaking of my last day at work... it suddenly occurred to me this morning that discounting the week off at Christmas I've been working solidly since the beginning of September (two months with the Procrastination People, three with The Nut House), and before that I'd had the stretch from the end of April to the beginning of July... so my brain is definitely wired for the working right now, and some part of me was assuming that I was going to be getting ready and going to work tomorrow morning. So while I know that I'm going to sit around and do as little as possible tomorrow (given the ongoing heat) I did have a brief "what am I going to do with myself this week" thought earlier in the day.

And it always amazes me how small the world can be when you're looking at things online, and how sometimes you're just supposed to find people. I followed one of the blog recommendations through Google Reader on Friday night... found a link on one of them to the blog of a guy I recognised from photos I've seen of him in various places... then this morning I discovered the same guy had opened a profile on one of the websites I use, which also had a link to his blog. So obviously I was meant to find it... Weird...

finding my shopping related cool

i wanna climb into the fridge tooThe name of game today was to stay as cool as possible for as much time as possible, with as little time outside in the hot weather as possible... and I think we pulled it off fairly nicely.

I tried to transfer as much of the cool morning air into my place first thing this morning as I could (what I really wish is that I could magically swap the air outside for the air inside) with limited success.

Then when Ma got here we were off to the stoopidmarket in my airconditioned car. Yaaaaaay for my airconditioned car! Especially because it was actually a little bit cool when I first got in it (so I didn't need to get rid of the hot before starting on the cool).

Because it is so damn hot I have no desire to be cooking anything, let alone eating anything hot... so it was a pretty "light on" shopping expedition... lots of fruit, some veg, and not that much else.

After a rather overheated unpacking we quit the sweatbox that is currently my house and jumped in my airconditioned car again (have I mentioned how grateful I am that my car actually has an aircon?) and shot down to Arndale. No real reason, other than, you know, shopping malls are airconditioned.

Nothing much of interest at Arndale... I completed my set of Alien movies (the only one I didn't have was the original), Ma had massive amounts of indecision and some retail bonding with scary shoplady over two groovy looking "Indian" blouses (she ended up buying both a white and a acid green one once the nice lady found her one that had a little more room to it) and while I was waiting for her to sort herself out I bought the coolest little jade Buddha necklace ($3, supposedly carved or something by Shaolin monks).

Then we headed into town (woohoo airconditioned car) to soak up some culture and free cool air at the Museum and Art Gallery.

Luckily my Parking Karma was working really well today... I dropped Ma off at the city end of the hill, told her to find cool shelter and I turned around and went back down the road looking for a park. As I came down the hill, one of the cars parked right under a massive shady tree pulled out and I got a park with no fuss and no bother. Woohoo...

Honestly, we should have just gone to the Art Gallery and wandered around there... the Museum really wasn't AS cool as the Gallery, and we went to see the dinosaur egg exhibit, which probably wasn't worth the $12. Once we'd seen and touched and played and watched at the dino thing we went to the Art Gallery, and really just wandered around in the cool, looked at the pretty stuff, checked out the things that were new and sat down a few times.

Then we went across the road for a late lunch in the airconditioned joy that is the food court under David Jones... then toddled back to my shaded (and airconditioned) car and came back here to Casa Sweatbox.

I crossing my fingers though, because there is a breeze out there, so I'm hoping it sticks around tonight and I can open the place up again.

photo friday: wattle sky

wattle skyHot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot... with a side order of sweaty...

The "heatwave" continues... although the temperature is supposed to drop to a reasonable level overnight, so I'll try and pump in as much "night air" as I can. And the daytime temperature is going to be dropping a little bit every day for the next week according to the forecast... although nowhere near enough in my books.

Last night I stopped doing the million and one things I'd done the night before to try and give me that extra "cooling edge"... all it had done was made me even hotter when they stopped working, so last night I just let it all go and let myself BE in the heat. It wasn't great, but I'm still alive, so it can't have been that bad.

And today was my last day at work. It was kind of a dull day... nothing much of anything happened, I cleaned out some emails, I wrote my final email newsletter, chased up one of two last minute things, I cleaned all the crap off my desk (actually I've been doing that in stages... I started on Wednesday because I knew I wouldn't get everything in my bag all at once) and left the desk pretty much the way I found it (ie empty).

It was an odd last day... it was just me and Sugarmonkey and Captain Slow... both H-San and Rockchick had the day off... but it was a cruisy kind of day, which was good. Plus we all went out for gelati at 3pm... and it had already partially melted by the time we walked the short distance back to work.

I also had lunch with Stu... originally the plan was for him just to swing by and pick something up (giraffes for Mrs Stu), but his day obviously cleared up after I spoke to him last night and we went off to Fasta Pasta (and had salads).

So, yeah... now I just have to wait and see what happens on the work front... or just wait until the end of March...

I will admit that I'm kind of fantasising as much about the cool ocean water in the background as I am about the surfers...
