ma's presents 2018

So, I know I've said variations on this a lot of late, but we've reached Christmas Eve Eve... and my mood is still essentially "Christmas, m'eh".

But I also had to put Ma's somewhat small group of presents together this evening, since I'll be out all day tomorrow. And as with a number of instances of wrapping Ma's presents, I was competing in the space between the heat of the afternoon and not wanting a fan to blow everything everywhere.

This also isn't the BIG shiny red box... this is it's younger sibling, the not-quite-as-big shiny red box.

The tissue paper and red and white ribbon remain the same (and recycled from year to year to year to year... because the environment, but also it makes more sense).

Again, not a huge list...
  • Harajuku Lovers Pop Electric G and Lil' Angel
  • Dick Francis novels (Risk, Bolt and Whip Hand... which all sound weird unless you know they're about horse racing)
  • Jax and Co wood and resin earrings
  • Hallmark 2018 snowman ornament
  • Chessex Frosted white dice set (yeah, these will probably end up in my dice bag, but I'm running a little mini DnD adventure for Ma on Christmas day)
  • Minifig-her 2019 calendar and wallpapers

So, yeah... that's about it.

ma's presents 2017

We've reached that point... the space between the last time Ma will be here and Christmas Day... also known as the ritual of the present wrapping. And by wrapping, I mean folding things into tissue paper and slapping the same ribbon I've been using since 2010 on it. What, it's environmentally conscious... or something.

I can always tell from either Ma's birthday or Christmas present photos what my employment situation was at the time... and it's clearly this isn't exactly a banner year. I will say that it's not like there were things I would have bought and couldn't... but I also didn't do a lot of looking, which I would have done previously. This is also the first year since 2007 where I didn't get her a pack of nougat. But I 100% forgot until this morning, and nowhere at the Village seems to carry it.

Chalk up another victim to my general vagueness about Christmas this year.

Anyway... it's a short list...
  • Harajuku Lovers Lil Angel perfume
  • Harajuku Lovers Love perfume
  • DVDs
  • Wonderwalls 2018 calendar (and iPhone wallpapers)
So... yeah...

photo saturday: the least exciting birthday weekend

mermaid's tailtwo years on

pink mountainstruck saviour
Okay, first things first...

Ma had her second operation on his shoulder at the very end of May, and is now back in a sling and on the mend.

The doctor called me after the operation, which was very sweet of him, to tell me everything went well, and Ma's physiotherapist seems to think that even this early on in the process (two weeks on Tuesday), her shoulder is about at the stage that they would expect it to be in two more weeks. So that's all pretty good news.

It does mean that we're back to square one with everything else though, but hopefully she'll be improving in leaps and bounds and will be back to her old self before we know it.

This is also why there wasn't a post last weekend... she was staying with her friends so that a) she had somebody with her and b) didn't have to deal with any stairs.

But that also meant that I didn't go up to her place last weekend since there wasn't a lot of point.

So, rolling back the clock slightly...

A couple of Sundays back now, I went to see a documentary on Armistead Maupin as part of the American Essentials Film Festival... and it was fantastic. Interestingly enough I may very well have been one of the youngest people in the room, but most of the crowd were gay gentlemen of a certain age. And because the Universe has a twisted sense of humour, while I didn't know anybody else in the room, I was sitting right next to one of the two guys from the gay men's art group I posed for a few weeks back. Because of course I was.

I will say that the documentary made the final three Tales books make a hell of a lot more sense (from the perspective of who the main characters were and why they were written at all after so long). I'm also really interested to read Maupin's biography that he's currently working on, which should be out later in the year.

Otherwise it's been a couple of weeks of not very much of anything. I had a chiro appointment at the end of last week, so I headed into the city, had my appointment and then had a bit of a wander around town... although it's always a little bit less exciting when you don't have money to spend on inconsequentials.

And then at the beginning of the week I got a message that The Nuthouse was going for drinks. I will admit I was a little noncommittal originally, but figured I had to go and do it at least once.

What I didn't realise until after I'd already decided was that I also had the first of the three Cabaret Festival shows scheduled for the same night... although luckily not until 10:30, so I was able to go to drinks, be last man standing as usual, get some dinner and then head off to the show.

Downside being that because I wasn't going to get out of the show until after midnight, I really didn't want to walk home and the buses don't run that late, so I drove in and only had a couple of drinks early in the evening.

It was actually nice to see the people who showed up... and I got a nice chat with a number of them. As sometimes happens, especially either around a long weekend (also, side note, I actually had no idea this was a long weekend until someone mentioned it on Friday... because why the hell would I even remember that?) or at less than a week's notice, it was a reduced crew, but it was all good.

Weirdly it feels both like quite a long time since I've seen them all, and also no time at all.

The last person (La Ninj) left sometime after 8... so I ordered some food, had dinner and then wandered down to the Riverbank. I still had an hour and a half to kill, so I end up having a wander along the river, taking some photos and listening to a podcast to fill in the time, which was quite nice.

And given that Briefs is a show I generally to a lot of cheering and whatnot at, and I also have a tendency to lose some of my voice at the pub, I was a little bit screwed... I think I made it though about the first half hour of the show before my voice gave up on my completely (or at least made it so that I couldn't cheer all that loud). I didn't lose it, but I've been more than a little husky today.

By the time I walked back to the car after the show and got home it was pushing 1am, so it's not really a big surprise that I had a bit of a slow start this morning.

And I clearly wasn't firing on all cylinders when I left the house, because I went out without my wallet. Fortunately I did have cash on me... so I bought my groceries with cash. It's not the first time I've done that, but previously I've had Ma to bail me out... I'm just glad I had the money with me.

ma's 70th birthday presents - beforema's 70th birthday presents - after (not particularly exciting tbd)

This week was also Ma's 70th birthday... but given that she only came out of the hospital the week before, there wasn't a hell of a lot we could really do to celebrate. I'm just thankful that we never got really organised and made any plans for this particular birthday.

The Pop! Vinyls seem actually even more appropriate right now to be honest, because these are what caused the whole bloody arm dilemma in the first place. Ma was heading over to the shopping centre to see if they had either of those figures in stock so she could put it on her list for her Secret Santa.

As soon as she told me that I filed it away in the back of my head, but I had to wait until Christmas before I could do anything about it because I had to wait to see what she actually got (turned out she got a completely different, but totally appropriate Pop)... but as soon as that happened I jumped online and ordered these two.

The perfume was just part of the stockpile I bought before Christmas... whenever we see her favourite perfume on special I like to stock up so that I can ration them out at Christmas and her birthday.

And it turned out that Me From Last Year had already bought a card... I don't know if I mentioned it at the time, but after I'd run around looking for cards for both Ma and Owlgirl's birthdays last year I decided to go and look in one last place and bought cards for both of them which where better than the cards I'd already bought... so I quite happily went with what I already had to hand.

Also, the slippers were because she asked for them... granted she asked for a couple of pairs which I got for her and she paid me back for, this was an extra pair I just threw in because why not.

Like I said, we didn't do very much of anything... I spend most of the afternoon with her, we watched a godawful movie on teevee (and amused ourselves by making fun of it, at least until it got really frustrating by the last third or so) and I did a bunch of stuff for her she couldn't really do for herself.

So it was quite literally the least exciting birthday weekend either of us have had in quite a while (if not ever).

It's also definitely something we'll have to make up for later.

ma's presents 2016

With a few exceptions, I feel a little like shopping for Christmas presents for Ma kind of fell over around the same time she did... (okay, too soon, I said it and even I think that was too soon).

It also seems because I was more shopping on instinct for the past month and a bit there's a more than usual distribution of snowmen... and none of them are Olaf, which is a change from recent years.

I honestly don't care what she does with the big plush snowman after Christmas... but it's soft and cuddly and adorable (and it was cheap as well).

Even though I could have wrapped her presents at any point recently, I left it until the last minute, partially because of the Haighs chocolate, but it also meant I could drop some of the duplicate Steven Universe toys in as theoretical stocking stuffers.

Other than that, the wrapping process was much the same as always. Again, not doing it late at night was a bonus, as was the fact that the returning star that is the big red shiny box wasn't crammed full...

photo saturday: ma's pre-birthday birthday

ma's birthday presents - beforema's birthday presents - after
It's not actually Ma's birthday until Tuesday but we did our usual trick of celebrating on the closest weekend. But more on that in a bit.

This week was, well, a bit shit to be honest. Work was busier again, but this time my usual offsiders weren't around. Annoying really.

And by the time I got home each night all I wanted to do was do nothing.

I also realised when I got to work on Monday that the inside seam of my dress pants had come unstitched. It would have been great if I'd seen that BEFORE I left the house... but no. And because the drycleaner I'm using at the moment is a bit shit, they won't have them fixed until next week.

On the up side, I wore jeans all week and zero fucks were given (mostly by me).

By the time Friday rolled around I was very happy to get the hell out of there and go and see my chiro. And then I spent about three hours wandering around the city looking for birthday cards. And seeing if anything else appeared on my radar for Ma's birthday. Nothing really did.

I did also visit all of my favourite stores... Haighs, Greenlight Comics, Zing... and then finished it off with dinner at Burger Theory.

By the time I got home it was after 8pm... so that was a 12+ hour day.

And I didn't want to do a damn thing once I unpacked everything (and realised that I have no fucking idea where the big bag of tissue paper and ribbon I use when I'm wrapping Ma's presents has gone), so I just soaked my feet in some Radox and watched Inside Out.

This morning Ma was getting her hair did, so I did the supermarket thing on my own. I didn't end up buying a ton of stuff, but somehow it seemed to cost a lot. I have no idea to be honest. I'm planning on a pea and ham (or in this case pea and chorizo) soup this week... the recipe I made last year actually, but swapping out the prosciutto for chorizo. The chicken and chorizo soup I made last week was pretty damn good... nice and spicy, mostly from the chorizo, which is why I want to try them again in the pea soup.

I also found a box and some tissue paper at one of the newsagents. I'd intended to get something last night but then realised I probably had stuff at home and then, as I mentioned, I couldn't find any of it. Annoying.

Thankfully I had plenty of time to unpack and wrap Ma's presents, as well as finish reading The Young Avengers graphic novel I got from Greenlight.

When Ma arrived, she opened her presents (all of which are pretty self explanatory from the picture, the pig is her card, because she's Year of the Pig and the Esio Trot book is one that a movie Ma likes is based on) and then we headed down the road to Target to see if we could find the movie Ma wanted last week and they didn't have.

Turns out they did have it... well, a single copy anyway.

From there we drove down to Harbour Town. We were headed down to the beach anyway, and we both wanted to stop off at the Bonds store... so it worked out well. I got a couple of new hoodie jackets and a new pair of trackies, and they were having a 40% off sale, so that worked out well.

Then it was on to Henley Square and lunch at Stella. It was Ma's choice, as is her prerogative, but I have to say that the menu wasn't especially inspiring... especially given the prices (and I kind of wish the menu on their website was still the menu, but they've updated the one in the restaurant and seem to have taken a bunch of stuff off).

Ma had what basically looked like eggplant lasagne (but which had a much more complicated name), and I went with one of the specials, pasta with prawns and bacon in a rose sauce. And I will say that although I wasn't that inspired when I ordered it, it was really nice... even if the prawns did come with their little butts attached (why, why would you do that in pasta... I want to eat it not deconstruct it) and one on top that was all legs and flippers and feelers and eyes and things (yep, also a giant world of nup).

And the view from the restaurant was really nice too, out over the reserve and the water and the jetty.

After lunch we finished off with coffee and same cake (Ma had Toblerone mousse cake and I had Mars Bar cheesecake... both very nice).

And that was pretty much it... but it was after 3:30 by the time we got back to my place. So not a very exciting day all things considered, but a nice one.

ma's presents - before, during and after
It's that time of the year again!

Well, it's been that time of the year for a little while now, but it's only when I come to wrap up Ma's presents that the fact that Christmas is pretty bloody immanent really hits me.

Yes, that's mostly because I only do it a couple of days before Christmas... but still.

And as always, the modus operandi is to wrap everything in tissue paper, tie it with a ribbon and fill up a box.

Thankfully I had just enough red, green and white tissue... although I did sub in a couple of pieces of silver, which I think saved my butt. And I've been recycling the same ribbons for the last five years... I didn't have to cut any new pieces this year.

This also has to be the last year I buy anything Olaf related... he's an easy buy because of Ma's love of all things snowman, but I ended up with three different things this year without realising it...
  • Summer Olaf Pop Vinyl
  • Disney Infinity Olaf
  • Itty Bittys plush Olaf
  • Harajuku Lovers Music perfume
  • Harajuku Lovers Love perfume (x2)
  • dec-ade 2016 calendar (and USB with iPhone wallpapers)
  • Moon Over Soho novel
  • From Up On Poppy Hill DVD
  • When Marnie Was There DVD
  • Square origami earrings
  • White paper crane earrings
  • Erstwilder lighthouse brooch
  • Follow Your Fate tee
  • Seagulls have the Phonebox tee
  • Lonely Spirit tee
  • The Shadow On The Moon tee
  • Haighs dark chocolate speckles
  • Haighs coffee pastilles
  • Cherry cranberry pistachio nougat
There's also some of the old favourites in there... the calendar, the nougat, the perfume. I actually ended up with more stuff than I realised... partly because I'd forgotten about the t-shirts and the Olaf stuff. But Ma does a lot of me during the year, so it's nice to spoil her when I can.

ma's pre-birthday birthday adventures

rockin birthday wishes
Today was pretty much all about Ma's birthday celebrations. Sure her birthday isn't actually until tomorrow, but then we generally celebrate either of our birthdays on the nearest Saturday, unless there's either Fringe stuff or Cabaret Festival stuff happening.

And because it's her birthday, she was having her hair did this morning, so she went off to do that and I had the morning to myself to do the shopping and whatnot.

When I went to grab my bag full of reusable shopping bags this morning it was far heavier than I was expecting, so I opened it up only to discover that the giant Easter egg I got back at the beginning of April was sitting there, still all wrapped up in silver paper. I moved it out of my fridge at some point when I ran out of room, and clearly forgot about it. At least it was a nice surprise.

I'm planning on upping my soup game this week with some roasted beetroot soup... which could be something of a disaster, we'll have to wait and see... but I did buy two big bunches of beetroot and the supermarket and everything else I needed.

I also found a cheap bread knife to take to work... we have one that's supposed to be a bread knife, but it's like trying to cut the bread with a wooden spoon, so hopefully this will be much improved.

Then it was back here to unpack and read the paper before Ma arrived.

ma's birthday presents before and after
I'd wrapped up all of Ma's presents last night... well except for the artwork from Josh (more on that in a minute) which was already wrapped up...
  • Princess Mononoke teeshirt
  • Ghibli elements teeshirt
  • Ghibli ballons teeshirt
  • Doctor Who Season 8 box set
  • Haighs dark chocolate pastilles in anniversary tin
  • Haighs 100th anniversary store magnets
  • Joshua Smith's The Art of Letting Go #3
The great thing about the three Haighs magnets is that we've actually been to all three of the stores... the Beehive Corner store here in Adelaide, the Block Arcade in Melbourne and QVB in Sydney.

Beyond heading off to the Cabaret Festive this evening, we really didn't have any plans for the majority of the day. But given that Ma now has a second Joshua artwork, it seemed to make more sense to just take it straight to the framing place rather than Ma taking it all the way home, living with it for a week or two and then bringing it back up to my place to then take to the framers.

the art of letting go
It was a pretty simple and straightforward trip actually... because this is the second piece Ma is having done, she wanted to get it done pretty much the same as the previous one. The only downside to that is the fact that the background teal colour is very specific and not something that it's easy to match in a frame colour.

So instead Ma decided to go with black... but otherwise, she should match the flamenco dancer.

Ma also suggested that since we'd be nearby, we should stop into IKEA... and in very much Ma style, I think her exact words were "we don't need to spend any money but they have a sale on". Turned out to be mostly true for her, less so for me.

In fact, the overwhelming theme for the day seems to have been that every time Ma has bought something it's turned out to be cheaper than she thought it was going to be. Unfortunately, I've been the one who has bought the majority of the things today.

Granted my IKEA bill was increased by the fact that I finally bought the illuminated display box... I'd decided I was definitely going to get one the last time we were in IKEA, but then they were totally out of stock. This time I just grabbed one as soon as I saw it on the shelf. I had no idea at the time what the hell I was actually going to put in it, but I've been obsessing over them since they first came out, so I knew I'd find a use for it.

I'm thinking I might rework my bedside table and use it as a bedside light instead of the one I have now (which is fine, just very bright)... and put Aka Usagi and Aozora Inago inside. And it looks pretty good, I must say. I don't have it set up in the bedroom yet, but it looks nice and fancy on the kitchen bench.

After stopping off at Bunnings for a sausage sizzle, we headed over to Arndale so that I could look at stick blenders. I'd had a brief look in Target after doing the shopping and had worked out that they were either really expensive or kind of cheap looking, with not a lot of middle ground. Plus they all seemed to come with jugs and attachments and whisks and whatnot, which I really didn't want.

We had a poke around, found a nice looking stick blender in Big W, but Harris Scarfe were supposed to be having a sale on kitchen things, so we wandered over there to do a price comparison. And let me just say that when your sale price is higher than your competitors full price, well I think I can safely say that you're doing it wrong.

It was actually doubly lucky that I went back to Big W though, since the price was marked as $50, but when I did a price check it came up as $30... so a definite bargain there!

Plus it's red and shiny... like my kettle and my Soda Stream... I am tending to collect kitchen paraphernalia that's red and shiny.

We had some time to kill before dinner but we really didn't want to do all that much, so after we got back here, I messed around on the laptop while Ma watched some awful movie on the teevee. I told her she could pick something from my library to watch, but she seemed content.

There weren't any grand plans for dinner... in fact we hadn't booked anywhere and didn't even make a proper decision about where we were going until this afternoon.

langtang nepalese
Where we ended up was the Langtang Nepalese Restaurant just down the street on Jeffcott Street. We've only had Nepalese once before as far as I can remember, and that was forever ago, so I was happy to check it out.

I do think that perhaps it's something where you might have to work your way through the menu to discover what you really like. I was lucky when I tried Indian food for the first time, what I had was the thing that instantly became my favourite (Lamb Rogan Josh), and it's the thing that I judge all other Indian restaurants against.

Langtang was pretty good overall... the service was good (although there was only us and a party of about eight or nine in the whole place) and the food was pretty damn nice.

We started with the chicken momos... now I don't know what the hell the tomatoey sauce that was served with them was, but it was so good... I had to resist the urge to lick the plate.

That was followed up with mixed vegetable curry with basil puree (the greeny coloured thing in the bottom right of the photo) and saag chicken... of the two I prefered the mixed vegetables... the chicken was tasty and tender, but the sauce was a little on the thin side.

Then it was off to the Festival Theatre.

We did have a little bit of a panic attack regarding parking and the foozeball game going on at the oval at the same time, I'd kind of assumed that the road would be blocked off going one way, so we went the other way only to discover that we couldn't actually get from there to where we wanted to be. And even more annoyingly, by the time we worked our way back around, the carpark had it's FULL sign up (and doubly annoyingly, by the time we'd done all the shit we needed to do to get a park, the Festival Centre carpark was taking cars again).

We found a park elsewhere and made it to the theatre just after the doors opened. And the seating gods were clearly with me... I'd expected us to be about four rows back given the seat numbers, but the way it was all set up, we were technically in the third row, but the two seats in front of us (well, more so in front of Ma really) didn't have seats in front of them, so we had a direct view through to Adam Hills live on stage, and when we came down off stage to talk to the people in the audience, he was essentially right in front of us.

But more on that later...

After the show we stopped off for a yummy buckwheat pancake with butterscotch and banana and some Italian hot chocolate.

All in all a pretty good day for Ma's birthday adventures to be honest.

ma's presents 2014

ma's presents 2014 - beforema's presents 2014 - duringma's presents 2014 - after
I decided to wrap Ma's presents tonight, since we weren't going to the movies... and I figured I'd give myself tomorrow night off.

I did the same thing I've done with Ma's presents since 2010, everything gets wrapped in tissue paper, tied up with a ribbon and then put into a larger container. But unfortunately, as I mentioned last year, the Matryoshka bag I've be reusing every year finally gave up the ghost... which is kind of sad.

So this year, I'm using the very lovely and shiny (but very cheap) box I snagged at Target a couple of years ago.

I had a tiny panic attack earlier today when I realised that I hadn't actually grabbed any of the tissue paper from Ma's place on Sunday, and while I knew I had a big bag of various and sundry bits of tissue mostly left over from Ma's birthday presents, I didn't think any of it was especially Christmasy. Thankfully it turned out I had enough green and red, plus some silver, to get the job done.

As always I tried to make sure that Ma had a bunch of things that were a surprise... then there are the "traditional" presents, the nougat and the calendar, which I make sure she has every year.

Other than that, it's pretty much a mixed bag of her interests...
  • Stephen Fry "More Fool Me" autobiography
  • Città Dalle Acque 2015 calendar and matching iPhone wallpapers
  • S.T.A.M.P.S Watch
  • Hallmark 2014 snowman ornament
  • Joshua Smith "The Dancer" print
  • Tread and Pedals inner-tube feather earrings
  • Harajuku Lovers Wicked Style perfume (Music, Love and G)
  • Ghibli City tee
  • The Wind Rises DVD
  • Funko glow-in-the-dark Olaf vinyl figure
  • Haighs dark chocolate freckles
  • Cherry Cranberry Pistachio Nougat
Unfortunately because I didn't want to roll up the Joshua Smith artwork just in case I damaged it somehow, I haven't really been able to "wrap" that... I'm just going to have to wing how I give it to her... it'll either be the very first thing, or the very last thing. In either case I think it's going to get the biggest reaction.

ma's birthday adventures

ma's presents beforema's presents after
Today was Ma's birthday... not just her general birthday celebration weekend, her actual birthday.

But weirdly I was the one who seemed to end up with all the presents.

Ma was getting her hair did first thing this morning, so I had a good chunk of the morning to myself before she got here. I started off with tidying the apartment and once I'd had a shower and got dressed I got inspired to write Ma's card but I couldn't wrap her presents because the box I bought yesterday turned out to be too small for everything.

So I headed off to do the shopping thing, with a brief detour to fill the car with petrol and wash the windows (also to fill the windscreen wiper tank with water since it was all out).

Shopping by myself always takes less time than shopping with Ma... which is understandable, I know exactly what I want and I'm only stopping where I need to stop, but it still surprises me how quickly I can make it around the supermarket by myself.

Once I was finished I took a quick detour into Target, only to find that they were having a 20% off sale on menswear, so I succumbed and bought the bear onesie... the size I thought was too small is actually the same size as the one I already have, plus it's very stretchy fabric, so I'm guessing it's going to be fine.

Weirdly, even though I'd bought petrol with my EFTPOS card... and I bought the groceries with the same card... but when I went to buy the onesie it came up with a "bad card read" error... and now matter what I tried I got the same error. I've never had that issue before... Ma has had similar problems with her cards on occasion but they're often fixed by something as simple as rubbing the card on your sleeve. That did not help me in the slightest.

I found a gift bag in one of the cheap shops that matched the box I'd already bought... it was a little hugemongous, but everything ended up fitting inside.

When I got home, attempting to carry everything up the stairs in one trip was something of a chore, but I managed it... that is one of the downsides of living on the third floor... you'll do just about anything to avoid making more trips up and down the stairs than is absolutely necessary.

As soon as I walked in I set about wrapping Ma's presents... I finally gave in this week and bought the Willow Tree Heart of Gold figure... other than that it was the double Mary Poppins experience with Saving Mr Banks and The Real Mary Poppins documentary plus some Fry and Laurie goodness with Jeeves and Wooster.

The card seemed like the perfect thing as soon as I saw it, especially given the fact she's been my own personal superhero for the last several months.

I also grabbed her a couple of Balfours custard tarts, since they're her favourite.

By the time Ma arrived I'd managed to unpack all the groceries and put everything away.

After she'd unwrapped her presents we dithered about a bit before deciding to head down to Marion (which was pretty much Ma's idea, although we did float the idea last weekend but ran out of time).

We did the usual circuit of Marion... but I ended up buying a bunch more things than I normally would have done. It started at T2 (which is now one of those dangerous places I just shouldn't go into)... I picked up some more Fruitalicious as well as a box of Chai to try. And we ran into J's mum coming out of the store as we were going in. Turns out J is back in London... and spent some time back in Adelaide before he went... so that seems to be the footnote for that particular story, which is always interesting.

I was also poking around a bit looking for a new winter jacket, but there literally isn't anything that's not completely casual/a hoodie in my size which is somewhat annoying. Even things that, according to the label, should be my size, because I own jackets in that size that fit me, somehow aren't my size.

Frustrating.

Ma was also half looking for clothes, but for the most part didn't find anything that worked for her.

We also called into the Build A Bear shop to see if they had any Toothlesses (Toothlessi?)... but they were all sold out, which doesn't really surprise me. It does very much come in the "kind of want to definitely don't need" category, but I did leave my details with the store in case they get more stock in. I'm not sure if I'll actually get one, but at least I have the option.

Like last week, just about every shop we went into we looked to see what they had in the way of Sodastream machines and everywhere had the same two models, neither of which are the one I was interested in.

That is, until we got to Kmart. For some reason they didn't have anything EXCEPT the model that I like... I would almost have said that they'd done an exclusive deal with the Sodastream people, since nothing else makes much sense. But I got it, and it's all red and pretty and shiny... plus it came with a sample pack of various flavourings to try at no extra cost, which is always a bonus.

I also grabbed one of the Kmart brand toasted sandwich machines... how much I'll use it is debatable, as is how long it'll actually last, but I paid $7.50 for it (hence the querying of it's lifespan) and I've had lunches that cost more. So even if it's a flash in the pan I'll get my money's worth out of it.

I did have the same problem trying to pay with my EFTPOS card in Kmart, so I'll definitely have to go into the bank next week and get a replacement card.

We were pretty much done with shopping at that stage, so we headed back in the general direction of home.

When we got to Greenhill Road, Ma didn't say anything but just took a detour to the right... and I just said to her "Haighs?", to which we replied "Well, it is my birthday"... so there's really no arguing with that.

They actually had a really good range of seconds chocolate this time... sometimes it's only one of two types, this time there was a lot of good stuff.

Once we got back here I put the Sodastream together and made my first bottle of fizzy water... and unsurprisingly, it was water with bubbles. The machine will probably see more action in summer, but it will be nice to be able to make my own beverages.

We dithered around a bit after that... watched a little bit of North by Northwest until it was time to head out for dinner.

Due to a lack of other idea we ended up going down the The Curious Squire on O'Connell Street. I've been wanting to go for ages, and it's somewhere we haven't been before, so it seemed like a plan.

And it was a decent plan for the most part. The decor is funky, the staff seem friendly... the menu does feel a tiny bit limited though, I mean they have sides out the proverbial, but there feels like a lot of repetition throughout the rest of the menu. And if you're not in the mood for pulled pork that slightly limits your choices a little.

I ended up ordering the burger... I know, I know, every time I've done that previously I've ended up commenting in the blog post that people need to remind me not to do that next time. And this was almost kind of like that... but it was perhaps a better, or at least more interesting burger than I've had in a while.

I couldn't help thinking that it needed one, possibly two less ingredients... but when the list of ingredients includes a beef patty, bacon, egg, lettuce, coleslaw, tomato, onion, cheese, squire sauce, pickle, mustard and ketchup then I think you could possible trim it a little. Not that I could tell you what needed to go... possibly the pickle, and whatever the sauce was that just dripped out the whole time I was eating (possibly the squire sauce).

I will also say that although putting your fries and onion rings into cute little wire baskets as though they've just come out of the oil is adorably sweet, it does mean that they don't keep any head and get cold in about five minutes flat. Also, $9 for approximately seven onion rings is a little pricey even at half the price.

Ma very much enjoyed her pulled pork and apple salad though, even though it was fucking enormous and she didn't end up eating all of the lettuce. That was kind of the weird thing actually... some things, like the onion rings, seemed to be undersized serves, but others, like the salad and also the drinks were fucking enormous.

From there we headed down to the Festival Theatre for some Cabaret Festival goodness.

And I won't go into a full on rant about the idiocy of shutting down a major arterial road into the city just because some people are going to be exiting a football game. Except to say it's fucking ridiculous.

I will, however, lament the fact that the nice men with the Spanish hot chocolate and the churros don't have a place in the "Winter Garden" food court this year, which made me very sad.

But more on our Cabaret show later... probably tomorrow...

ma's presents 2013

ma's presents 2013 - beforema's presents 2013 - after
It's reached that time of the year when I needed to buckle down and wrap Ma's Christmas presents.

And, to be honest, this year it's kind of the first time that Christmas feels really real... yes, I've put the tree up at Ma's place and we've made some Christmas goodies, and I've watched a few Christmas movies, but it all feels a little distant this year. Other things on my mind and all that.

But opening up the giant square Matryoshka bag and pulling everything out of the "Away For Christmas/Birthdays" box in my wardrobe and wrapping things in tissue paper and rummaging through the bag of ribbon we recycle from year to year looking for a piece that will go around the present in question has put me in a somewhat better frame of mind and actually made it feel like Christmas a little bit more.

To be honest, Ma and I have been suffering from the same problem for a while now... neither of us really NEEDS anything at Christmas time, so the presents mostly end up being a little bit of this and that and a few returning standards (like the calendar and the nougat)...
  • Maxwell Williams Kris Kringle stackable snowman mugs
  • Nanoblock Snowman
  • Wind-up hopping Snowman
  • Snowman gift tag
  • Quartet DVD
  • Doctor Who Series 7 (Part 2) box set
  • Doctor Who vinyl toy
  • Eastern 2014 calendar (and USB with iPhone wallpapers)
  • Red resin seahorse brooch
  • Wooden fox brooch
  • Harajuku Lovers Wicked Style perfume (Music, Lil Angel and G)
  • Cherry Cranberry Pistachio Nougat
Sadly I think this may be the last year of the Matryoshka bag as it's developing a rip along one of the fold lines. Although it hasn't had too bad a run since I've used it for the last three Christmases, as well as the original usage for her birthday in 2009.

ma's birthday adventures

I love a Saturday birthday adventure that's calm, all comes together and don't necessarily consume ten hours... whether it's mine or someone else's.

When I got up this morning I did the usual thing of tidying away all my clutter and got all inspired to wrap Ma's presents there and then.

the before, during and after of ma's birthday presents
Once I got it all together it looked like more than the list I had in my head, especially since I did the cross-stitch by hand:
  • Wee Little Stitches Doctor Who cross-stitch
  • Harajuku Lovers - G of the Sea
  • Tick Tock Type typewriter earrings
  • Lovelinks bracelet safety chain
  • Rebecca Murphy print
  • Seahorse card
  • Haigh's Coffee Pastilles
Because I wanted to protect the Rebecca Murphy print I put it inside a sheet of tissue paper, but then thought that I should put a note on it to make sure that Ma knew to lift up the tissue paper carefully... and one thing led to another and before I knew where I was I was putting little cryptic notes on all of the parcels.

Things like "snap me" for the  safety chain, "eat me" for the pastilles... although the one that got the biggest reaction from Ma was the "remember me (and run you clever girl)" one I did for the cross-stitch.

Which she absolutely loved, which was good.

And she really liked the card too, which was a relief.

But I'm kind of getting ahead of myself... I wrapped up everything, and had to take photos in the doorway because there wasn't enough light inside even with all the lights on.

The whole thing did delay the start of my morning somewhat, so I didn't actually get to the supermarket until after 9am... which is positively criminal!

I'm also glad that we don't regularly shop at 9am... mostly because there was an extra woman working at Bakers Delight and she was far too perky to be allowed to live.

I did my shopping in record time and after a quick detour to see the Honey Man, who turned out to be closed, which was annoying and disappointing, I still made it home before 9:45.

And I had plenty of time to unpack everything, put it away, read the paper and actually sit down to read some more of the Lego Minifigure Character Encyclopaedia before Ma got here.

Naturally the first thing that happened when she got here was the present thing...

I'd also printed out the menus from The Highway and tucked those in the box too so we could decide whether or not we wanted to go to the bistro or the lounge bar... the lounge won out, although we may need to go back to visit the bistro at some stage.

Once we were done with present time, we jumped in the car and headed down to check out Ghostpatrol's show. We didn't spend too long there, but it was good to see it all again.

the kab101 exhibition
Next up we headed into the city to check out the KAB101 show.

I'm actually really glad that I didn't go last night... we spoke to a guy who I think was the gallery owner, and he was saying that they'd had about 1000 people through last night... and I know that part of that would have been due to how long they were open, but the fact that we went today meant that there was pretty much only people connected with the gallery there.

And some cute little dogs who were running around like crazy. But that's okay because it's essentially all concrete, an old mechanics or something.

There were some great pieces in the exhibition, although once again larger than I have room for and more expensive than my budget. There were a couple of smaller pieces, but they weren't necessarily some of KAB's better work... I'm guessing that given the price they were, if they'd been in different colours they would have sold last night.

the mountain of food for ma's hwy birthday lunch
And then we headed down to The Highway for lunch.

I've kind of had the thought in the back of my head to find a reason to head to Hwy for lunch for a while, but it was actually due to the fact H-San and I went there for a work thing and they gave us some of the fried pickles and some great dips that really made me go, "yeah... that's so happening".

We ended up with a small mountain of food... we ordered a serve of the fried pickles and a serve of the potato skins as well as a burger for me and the roast pork for Ma.

I though that the pickles and potatoes were going to come out first, but it all ended up coming out at the same time... I guess that could have been a good thing, given that we couldn't just plow through the entrees and not leave any room for mains.

Of the two entrees, the potato skins were definitely my favourite.

The burger was pretty good... a good size, not stacked so full of stuff that it was impossible to eat and tasty. But I think I've been spoiled so badly by Burger Theory's burger patties that I need to stop ordering burgers from anywhere else. I always end up comparing the patties unfavourably to BT burgers.

It wasn't that it was bad... it was just more of a solid patty.

And I think because of all the entree goodies, I just couldn't finish it. I didn't even try to finish the fries that came with it, but I got to a certain point and just didn't want any more burger.

All in all though, I'll definitely go back... mostly because I want to sample some of the other things on the menu... plus I wouldn't mind trying the bistro.

Now normally at this time of year, and given that it was Ma's birthday celebration, this post could have been finished off with some reference to going to an Adelaide Cabaret Festival show... but to be honest since David Campbell stood down as the Festival Director it's been reverting to more traditional cabaret shows and there's been much less stuff that we're interested in going to see. There were a couple this year, but nothing that got either of us excited enough to really worry about.

It's kind of disappointing, but it does leave more money in the kitty for next year's Fringe.

So that was Ma's birthday celebrations... a good, if slightly compact day.

ma's presents 2012

It seems that like many other things that start out with a practical purpose it seems that the giant square Matryoshka bag has become something of a tradition for me to put all of Ma's Christmas presents in.

Although I can see the big shiny red box possibly returning next year since it's both giant and so very, very, very shiny. And it was only a couple of dollars at Target.

Once again I've individually wrapped all of Ma's things in tissue paper and tied them all up with ribbon (well, except for the stuff in the box, it was a little too big to tie up.

Wrapping was actually somewhat easier than usual (perhaps because I wasn't doing it at 10pm for a change)... partly helped by the fact that all the tissue paper that I bought is half the size of regular sheets of tissue paper... which actually turned out to be incredibly helpful... I may need to go and buy some more of that stuff after Christmas.

Interestingly, although most of the stuff is definitely on theme, quite a bit of it was stuff that I more or less bought on a whim.

Surprisingly there isn't really any jewellery this time around... just a couple of beads for her bracelet (she picked them both, I just paid for them), but that's it...

photo friday: pink, black and ma's birthday presents

pixelface 3000store's muertos girl

Two things I had reinforced to me this week... the first being to always check the calendar.

It's especially important to check the calendar when you send your boss down the street to try a Burger Theory burger and it turns out that they're not actually in that location on that day.

I'm not sure how long that will be grist for the mill, however I think the fact that he managed to have not one, but two Burger Theory burgers today at lunch may have made up for it a little bit.

The second thing is kind of related to the first in a way...

Sometimes it matters where you go to lunch. Because the Burger Theory truck wasn't where I hoped it would be, I had to find alternative lunch arrangement... which meant I ended up going to Bing Boy in Southern Cross.

And after lunch I poked around the newsagent... even though I'd already bought Ma a card, had a box for her presents and bought tissue paper and ribbon... well, I saw a card I liked better that matched the ribbon and tissue paper... and then I saw a box that went with the card... and then I saw a cute little keyring...

Which was good because I really didn't have that many things for Ma that she didn't already know about...

ma's birthday presents 2012 - before, during and after

I do enjoy wrapping everything up into little parcels that then go into one big parcel...

This year's little parcels are:

  • Super G Harajuku Lovers perfume
  • Kim David Smith tickets (and a bunch of other ticket stubs from past shows)
  • Glass marble
  • Sydney Opera House treble clef pencil
  • Lovelinks Seahorse charm
  • Kimmidoll keyring
  • Arrietty DVD
  • Lisa Vanin badges
  • Haighs Chocolate Coffee Pastilles
  • USB with SYTYCD Season 9 epsiodes
I also included the Google Map directions for Pearl's Diner (Burger Theory's new suburban diner) where we're hopefully going to go for lunch tomorrow, as well as a somewhat questionably drawn interpretation of a Balfours custard tart which I picked up for her at the supermarket tonight.

Tomorrow is going to be a very, very busy day...

ma's presents 2011

ma's presents 2011It hasn't really been a great evening... I feel like crap, I can't find the charger for my digital camera battery... but mostly everything is just really, really difficult because I feel like crap.

So it took me longer than usual to wrap all of Ma's presents. And the before and after photos are a bit shit...

And I just found the battery charger... because I always think that's it's white when it's actually black, so even though I probably looked at it about a dozen times tonight, I didn't see it.

Anyway... Ma's presents are wrapped...

And it seems like the "one bag, many tissue paper wrapped items" has turned into a thing... which is fine, it's easier to load the car with them, and they take up less space in the house.

So here's the list... I'm going to bed...
  • Jewellery
    • Feminique Necklace
    • Silver Lovelinks beads x 4
    • Sailing ship brooch
    • Claire Ishino pendant and earrings

post weekend roundup

I'm suffering from a pronounced case of "Really Can't Be Fucked" today...

Partly I think it's due to the fact of yesterday, which I'd been looking forward to for a while now, being incredibly underwhelming.

Actually there's a whole thought process running through my head about life in general being underwhelming at present... things that have previously been exciting or engaging don't seem to be as good...

But I don't know if it's the things or if it's me...

Enough with the dime store psychology... I just wanted to catch up on a few things from the last day or so...

spirit guide portraits 2011Spirit guide portraits

First up are the spirit guide portraits from yesterday...

To a degree they're both kind of disappointing... or rather not what I was expecting. Since last year I'd been mulling around the idea of asking for "female energy"... mostly as a contrast to the male portraits I've gotten for the last three years.

And that's exactly what I asked for... but as you can see on the left hand side, that's really not what I got. Or at least not exclusively.

What's odd is that even though it's not what I asked for particularly, it is kinda stuffed with symbols that work for me (or are close to symbols that do).

The two figures have some similarity to two of the three figures from the Quiet Centre trio a couple of years ago. Then there's the moon over water and the bird.

Actually the bird freaked me out a little bit. Shiona was most of the way through the piece, but hadn't added the bird or the "stuff" over the top of the moon/figures, and I thought to myself "there should be a bird there"... and then she started making some marks over on the right hand side, and as she finished one of the lines I thought "that's a bird!".

Whether it was just completely coincidental or not, I don't know... but it had me going for a moment or two.

I really don't remember much of what she said about it... something about wholeness and feeling worthy... and I think the old man was me or part of me or something... I really don't remember. But even though it wasn't what I asked for I do kinda like it. It's also the first portrait I've had done on paper that wasn't navy blue... but the black worked nicely.

Unfortunately the "earth" coloured paper on the other portrait wasn't quite such a success.

In fact the whole second portrait was a bit of a let down. But I'm wondering if that's all because of the paper.

Last year, while Shiona was doing Ma's portrait, she mentioned that Ma and I had had past lives together, most notably Egypt. And given that I'm fond of all things Egyptian I kinda wanted to manoeuvre this portrait in that general direction. Hindsight would suggest that that was perhaps a mistake.

Interestingly, given what happened as the portrait progressed, it would seem that one of us was an Ancient Egyptian drag queen. And I'm still not sure about the Mr Whippy hairdo on the other one.

When Shiona first started sketching out the figures, the lower one was male... but at a certain point, possibly as she started to do the eyes, it became an older female figure. Actually she originally started out with her eyes shut.

The story behind the portrait was fairly vague as well... love, trust, journey, etc.

Potentially that wasn't anything in either of the portraits that she couldn't have intuited from the fact that a) I've come back asking for different things each time, theoretically searching for something (but really I'm just interested in different aspects of the process and having different kinds of images), b) Ma and I have been to the expo four years running and c) whatever interactions she remembers from previous occasions.

But it still means she has a high degree of skill in reading people, as well as the artistic skill... so I'm not really bothered either way.

However, I think this is my last portrait.

kublai khan mongolian bbqKublai Khan Mongolian BBQ

I'd never been to Mongolian BBQ before... and Ma had only been once before... but it was her choice for her birthday dinner. Even though Twitter generally recommended the Genghis Khan restaurant in Rostrevor, we went with another Khan... Kublai Khan in Parkside. And mostly because it was closer and it was the place Ma had been previously.

Normally I'm not big on restaurant reviews... but it was so incredibly underwhelming that I felt like I needed to mention it.

The decor is generically suburban Asian restaurant, lots of red and gold and lanterns and the staff are dressed in what seem to be generic Asian outfits.

When we walked in, I can't really remember whether we had to go to one of the waitresses or if she kind of met us half way, but she had a handwritten list in her hand with the reservations on it... and when I told her my name, she couldn't seem to find it. There was some brief back and forth between her and and older woman, then I think the older guy from the photo stuck his head through from the bar/register area and called out some number.

I wasn't exactly sure what he said, but he pointed in a general direction... and then they left us to it. Nobody bothered to show us to our table, and it was only because the table in question was the only two person table in that area that I guessed it was ours.

The service didn't really get that much better. Although I will admit that they cleared the used bowls from the table fairly quickly... but that was about it in the plus column.

The orange juice I ordered was incredibly watery, and not that big... I'm guessing Ma's soda, lime and bitters was okay... she didn't mention anything.

The food itself was okay... although given that you pick out your own meat, your own vegetables and your own sauces... it has the potential to be very hit and miss. In fact, the first bowl I made up was awesome, the second (an attempt at Sweet and Sour) tasted distinctly homemade (not bad, but not overly interesting, or possible not what I was expecting from the label "sweet and sour") and the third was a variation on the first.

I could have done with slightly smaller bowls though... the temptation is to fill them up quite high given the fact that the meat is frozen into curls, and after three bowls I was very full, and I would have liked a chance to experiment with more variations.

The other thing that seemed to be sadly missing were the smiles in the photograph above... I'm not sure if it would have made a difference if the younger guy had been there, but there weren't really any smiles or even acknowledgement when they took the bowls from you or thrust them back at you... there might have been a cursory nod, but that was about it. Not really particularly inviting.

And then when we were finished eating and I asked for the bill, the waitress proceeded to clear everything off the table, which just seemed unnecessarily pushy.

So in the final analysis, food = decent, service = shit. They weren't rude as such, but they also weren't especially welcoming.

I'd be interested to try the other Khan restaurant though, because I like the concept.

ma's birthday presents 2011Ma's Birthday Presents 2011

Even though we went out for dinner on Saturday, and normally we do the present thing on the weekend preceding either birthday, this year I'll actually be seeing Ma on her birthday day.

It's funny... for the past couple of years since I started dropping random presents for Ma into a cardboard box in my wardrobe as I buy them, I'm never quite sure what the hell is in there until either the relevant occasion comes along.

Although I think just under half of the stuff is been bought in the last week or so...

As usual though, there's something seahorsey, earrings and a pendant...
  • "M" mug (it looks like a plastic disposable cup, but it's porcelain)
  • 3D lenticular lighthouse bookmark (mostly for shits and giggles)
  • Dear Me: A Letter to my 16 year old self (which I picked up during the Borders closing down sale)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides tickets (symbolised by a tiny version of the poster, since I'll need the tickets before then)
  • Feminique pendant (to replace the one she lost... although I'm giving her the fancier one of the two she picked out since we're going to all the Adelaide Cabaret Shows this month)
  • Cambridge/seahorse spoon top brooch
  • Marcasite seahorse brooch
  • Triple coin earrings
  • Scarf pendant (that whole thing in the upper right corner... the rings and the big hanging thing get threaded on the scarf)
  • Kensington Royal Palace Japonisme Fan card (which I haven't written in yet, since I'm not feeling especially inspired at present)
There isn't an "after" shot this year, since I'm reusing the big square red and white Matryoshka bag from a couple of years ago (which also got another go around at Christmas last year).

So that's about it really... a somewhat longer post than I was originally intending it to be... but I feel a little better for having gone "blah blah blah".
