The Offerings of War - Gilbert Bayes

I'll let you in on a little secret... I was actually bored with my last template fairly quickly... which isn't that great to be honest!

And while I wasn't constantly thinking about taking shots while I was in Sydney that I could use as new templates, it did cross my mind a couple of times, most specifically when we were outside of the Art Gallery on the first afternoon.

I just loved the two equestrian statues outside the Gallery (actually I loved the whole frontage of the Gallery to be honest)... interestingly enough I preferred this one, The Offerings of War, to it's flanking statue, The Offerings of Peace.

If I had to pick a reason, I think it was the staff with the little winged figure on it... and to be honest, I think the lighting was better on War than it was on Peace. But he just fitted quite nicely into the long narrow template format.

I also did a little bit of fiddling around and I came up with a new subtitle for the blog... which I have to thank Andrew for. I don't think I was very THAT "vague and esoteric"... well, esoteric maybe but vague not so much... but when I saw his description of me as "garrulous" and found the definition (adj, excessively talkative in a rambling, roundabout manner, esp. about trivial matters) I just knew I'd found the word and description that totally sums up both me and the blog.

Oh, and to match in with the "Sydney" template, I added a somewhat iconic wallpaper... *grin*

This week's bumper Random Hotness takes a slight detour through my psyche... so grab a pair of wading boots and come along.

I don't know that I would exactly call it a fetish... but I have this thing about a guy in a hoodie and not much else... actually the ultimate is a guy in a hoodie and NOTHING else... and it should be the jacket kind with the zipper, open... and the hood has to be up. I know... but trust me, it's by no means the strangest thing that turns me on.

Oddly enough, for whatever reason, photos like that are in reasonable short supply, so these are some I've managed to scrape together...

The house I grew up in... was boxey, semi-detatched and, although I didn't always realise it at the time, a pretty wonderful place to be.

When I was a child I wanted to be... a librarian (I even did work experience at a library... I forgot that it was mostly about dealing with people... books are good, people not so much).

The moment that changed me for ever... meeting Ludo.

My greatest inspiration... sounds pretty hokey, but it's the best I can come up with... is the world outside.

My real-life villain... are my neighbours.

If I could change one thing about myself... it would be to trade in my body and get the upgraded model.

At night I dream of... nothing... or nothing I remember very often anyway.

What I see when I look in the mirror... is a fine layer of dust... I really ought to dust my bedroom mirror actually...

My style icon... is anybody who knows what suits them and makes it look good.

My favourite item of clothing... changes frequently.

I wish I'd never worn... pastel green pants with a pastel pink, yellow and green shirt accessorised with a knitted pastel tie and pale grey velcro shoes... and I remember it in such detail because there are photos. I was about 12 at the time though.

It's not fashionable but I like... jeans with rips across the knees and below the butt... not on me obviously, but just as a look.

You wouldn't know it but I'm very good at... procrastination... oh, wait, you might know that already...

You may not know it but I'm no good at... reverse parallel parking.

All my money goes on... essentials.

If I have time to myself... I read or fiddle on the interwebz or... oh, who am I kidding, I have nothing BUT time to myself.

I drive/ride... a silver Daewoo Lanos.

My house/flat is... sadly not the peaceful haven it once was.

My most valuable possession is... I'm not sure what my most VALUABLE possession is (maybe my car?) but my most VALUED posession would be my digital camera.

My favourite building... would be something Art Deco just at the moment.

Movie heaven... is a tube of Pringles, a packet of Maltesers, a bottle of water and seats in the dead centre of a quiet cinema and a movie that doesn't disappoint.

A book that changed me... Milkman's on His Way by David Rees, the first gay novel I ever read. It just widened out my world.

My favourite work of art... is the naked male body.

The last album I bought/downloaded... was so long ago I can't actually remember what it might have been.

The person who really makes me laugh... Ma.

The shop I can't walk past... is a bookshop (or, more recently, somewhere that sells DVDs)

The best invention ever... would have to be the photograph.

In ten years time, I hope to be... sorted!

My greatest regret... is having so many other regrets.

My life in seven words... "not quite where it should be yet".

movies: vantage point

vantage point - 8 strangers. 8 points of view. 1 truth.Since we missed out on a movie last week due to the Sydney trip (it's already been a week since we left... *sob*) and the fact that Ma had this week off work, we decided to go and see a movie today.

We went down to Marion and had a choice between a couple of things, but ended up seeing Vantage Point (oh and the dumb ticket girl at Marion asked me if I wanted to sit in the centre, since they've started allocating tickets... and I just said sure... there was no way I was going to sit in the "allocated" seat anyway... they can do whatever they like, I'm gunna sit wherever the hell I like thank you very much!).

I didn't know a great deal about the movie, other than it repeats the same event from the viewpoint of eight different people... and really, once you know that, there really isn't anything more you need to know.

You watch the first version, and then the rest of the movie is spent going over and over and over the same events until at the end you work out what the hell has really been going on.

I just wish that the people responsible for cutting the trailers didn't always find a way to put a bunch of spoilers into the trailers... specifically the stuff involving William Hurt's presidential character.

It's something of an odd film... it's equal parts a movie where you put your brain in neutral and just enjoy the ride and a movie where you're trying to work out what the hell actually happened. And just when you think you're getting close to working something out, it fades to white, then to black and you get the time in the bottom corner counting down to noon again and you're off with another character.

The plot is possibly a little bit thin on the ground, since they only really have about 20 minutes worth of actual film, the remaining hour and a bit is taken up with redoing it over and over and over.

And there were certain characters I kind of suspected from the beginning... in fact even within the very first loop of the story I thought... "well, you're going to be up to no good!"... and I was proved right.

The action scenes and fast cutting and everything get ratcheted up as the movie goes along, so you start off at a reasonably sedate pace and pretty much inside one room, and by the end it's all fast editing and quick camera work and whatnot.

While Ma had a bit of a nitpick about what Dennis Quaid's character manages to walk away from, that didn't bother me so much as some of the very fast driving sequences... either they used a fair bit of CGI to put the cars on the road, or something, but they were all driving very fast, and often going through spaces that, as you're looking at the character's POV you're thinking... "well now you're screwed, the car isn't going to go through there"... then you switch to an exterior shot and suddenly the car has made it through the gap and seemed to have a ton of room to spare.

It was an interesting premise though (the repeating time thing), and while it's not the greatest movie ever made and you can quite easily pick it to pieces after it's over, it's still fairly entertaining.

I spend most of yesterday afternoon struggling with a temperamental and hideously slow computer while going through all my photos from Sydney so I could have something to post with my day-by-day account of my trip... and then most of today, on and off, writing up my original notes into a slightly more readable format...

So now we have Yani on Tour: The Complete Collection... Day One, Day Two, Day Three and Day Four...

You may require a packed lunch and a thermos... they're pretty extensive posts... I do know how to tell a story... and you all know I'm garrulous at the best of times *wink*... I've also probably been more than a little fast and loose with my tense on occasion... trying to write a post in the past as though you're in the present all gets a bit much after a while...

post travel shopping

red jake with tomatoesNothing like a little bit of somewhat exhausted, slightly sleep deprived shopping when pretty much all you've done for the last four days or so is walk and walk and walk and walk...

So we got off to something of a disorganised start this morning... I wasn't ready, then I forgot to take my honey pot so we could stop off at the Honey Man... and I didn't have anything resembling a shopping list, so we just played it by ear.

Then, after we'd done all the shopping and were going back out again to drop in my one roll of film and get the honey, it turned out that for whatever reason the North Adelaide Village just happened to be having a fire drill or false alarm or actual fire (although I doubt that)... and so we couldn't stop off there first... so we went off the the Honey Man, then went to Arndale for no really good reason... got bored with walking around there, came back and dropped off the film.

Then Ma got back on her proverbial bike and pedalled off home... I think we'd pretty much reached saturation point on spending time together anyway, and neither of us really wanted to do any more walking... plus we'll be seeing either other on Tuesday when we go to the movies, so it's probably good that we cut today fairly short. Also hopefully gives me a chance to get my house looking somewhat reasonable again, do some writing, catch up on my blogroll and all the other little bits and pieces that I've missed with being away...

it's my (34th) birthday

happy 34th birthday to me!Yes, I am returned safely from the loving embrace of Sydney to the hot and sweaty gym sock that is currently Adelaide...

This is possibly the most unbirthdayly birthday I have EVER had in my entire life...

I mean waking up in Sydney on your birthday is a very pleasant way to start one's day... but it's been a really disjointed and very uncelebratory birthday what with all the travelling and waiting and airplanes and whatnot, even though I spent part of it in Sydney.

It's weird, and I'm not sure I can explain it, if only because I'm overheated and tired and just generally exhausted... mostly happy, but knackered.

I'll try and get time to download the 657 photos I took (not counting the roll of 24 from my SRL) and do something about writing up some version of my notes from the four days, but that probably won't happen until about Sunday.

And thanks to Tom, Andrew and Monty for their hospitality while I was in Sydney (even if it was only for one evening... and no matter what they may have said about me *wink*)...

yani on tour - day four

sydney art decoToday's theme is Deco... our hotel was in the middle of all these Art Deco buildings (actually I think our hotel WAS an Art Deco building, although not an overly pretty one given all the competition)... and seeing all these places just confirmed that my favourite style of architecture is definitely Art Deco... all the buildings seem to have names, and there's all these rounded corners and interesting brickwork... yummy!

Interestingly, if the arch window in the bottom left corner is a very Art Deco thing, then my love of all things Deco has existed since I was a kid... my favourite window in Play School when I was little was ALWAYS the arch window...

And so... Yani on Tour - The Final Day!

It's my birfday!

An interesting aside, the fact that it WAS my birthday also led to a new codeword for the identification of a cute guy as he approached or went past... "birthday"... because the Universe must have known it was my birthday AND my last day in Sydney and kept sending all the pretties my way.

I got up fairly early again (I actually don't think there's been a day when I haven't been up around or before 6am), had a shower, finished off the last of my packing and then cleared out everything from my room and dragged it all up the corridor to Ma's room before we went off for breakfast.

We followed Macleay Street down and around the hill towards Wooloomooloo Bay (lord I'd hate to live there, there's too many oo's in the address name), taking photos of all the Art Deco houses on the way and anything else that seemed slightly interesting. I'm not sure ALL the houses were strictly Art Deco, but whatever they were, I really like it.

After some umming and aahhing we had breakfast in some random hole in the wall cafe right opposite the hotel on the wharf... which wasn't bad considering... and they did stock Chocolate, Honey and Malt milk which I haven't had in FOREVER! I'm not even sure they stock in SA anymore... must remember to look...

Then we came back up the hill and up and down all the little side roads off Macleay Street, finding more Deco buildings and giving my now recharged camera battery something of a workout (and I discovered that my new 2 GB memory card in my camera will hold something like 1200 photos). We ended up going past the hotel in search of somewhere we could stop and have something to drink... and while there were probably a ton of places we could have stopped, nothing seemed quite like the right kind of place, so we ended up going further and further down the road until we stopped at some random little French place (again with the Frenchness... there was a whole bunch of Frenchness happening on this trip, I tell ya) and we were basically halfway down Victoria Street, and nearly at the Green Park Hotel where I'd had drinks with the boys on Wednesday night.

Then we wandered back to the hotel and did much sitting around until it was check out time (okay, it was less than half an hour, but still). Then we went down and checked out (*sob sob sob*) which was fairly easy since we'd prepaid for the rooms and all we needed to do was hand in our keys and get them to shove our luggage in the back room until the shuttle bus came to pick us up. Technically we should probably have had a later start to the morning, checked out and THEN gone for a late breakfast and a wander... but we didn't, so we had time to kill (although only about an hour or so), so we ended up doing more wandering around the general Potts Point area, and instead of going south or west like we had been doing, we went east a bit and ended up down by Elizabeth Bay. And again with the Art Deco. I am SO all about the Art Deco after this trip!

After we wandered back up towards the hotel I made what was possibly the most important discovery of the trip... I found Farmers Union Iced Coffee in Sydney! Yes, I found it... in the Woolworths directly across from the hotel of all places! And it was worse because we went in there on the first afternoon, but I never went as far as the fridge section, so I never saw it until our last day. Granted they only had the regular version and the light version (I would have sacrificed a small animal of some sort for some of the strong version), but they did have the big two litre bottles... and if they had it in one Woolworths, odds are good other ones around the city might (or at least could order it in from the Potts Point store... which is semi important given the conversation I had with Tom and Andrew at drinks on Wednesday night).

We sat in the sunshine at a bus stop next to the hotel and drank our Iced Coffees... then went and loitered around in the lobby for fifteen or so minutes until the shuttle bus rocked up (and it was actually early, if you can imagine such a thing... AND we were the second to last pick-up stop, so we didn't have to endure all the trauma of being driven somewhat recklessly around the city again)... and then instead of the alleged 45 minutes it was supposed to take to get to the airport, the driver took whatever the appropriate freeway was and we were at the airport in around twenty minutes.

Of course that meant that Boarding Pass, God of Airline Travel, had to take his revenge and the plane that was supposed to leave at 1:50 was delayed until the fairly exacting time of 2:22pm.

But I had my free Birthday Boost Juice to get (mmmm King William Chocolate) and ended up buying a small yet funky Caterpillar backpack (which is somewhat ironic since Ma used to work for Caterpillar in Adelaide when she first moved here, and I think that's where she actually met the Paternal Creature... so if it wasn't for Caterpillar, I might not be here... scary thought)... sure, I was probably overcharged for it, since I did buy it in the airport, but it was a cute little bag.

Luckily there weren't any further delays to the flight and we were soon up, up and away...

I did discover something interesting... when we went to Melbourne last time, and when we were on the flight to Sydney I sat in the middle seat and let Ma have the window seat... and on every one of those flights I had varying degrees of nausea... but on our return flight I got the window seat... and there wasn't the vaguest bit of nausea to be seen... even though we had a little bit of turbulence while flying over Victoria... so from now on it's the window seat for me! Weird really... and I can't explain it...

When we finally made it back to Adelaide, after some slight dicking around (Ma had lost the tag off her luggage, and it was the nice red thong one we got from Kathmandu, so we had to ask at the baggage counter and the hissy old queen in front of us took forever) we grabbed a cab back to my place, and while I'm a past master at the whole silent cab ride thing, Ma always ends up being Chatty Cathy, but the driver wasn't too bad, so it wasn't overly painful. I did surprise myself... he wanted to know if we had a specific route we wanted to take from the airport to my place, and Ma started to pipe up with something, and suddenly I opened my mouth and the whole journey, complete with road names and everything just spilled out... now I'm not somebody who navigates by street names... I do everything by landmarks, so I kinda scared myself as it all came tumbling out...

sydney meemaws and birthday presentsThen finally it was Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jigg...

My house wasn't actually all that bad... even though it had been sitting in the heat for four days with no fans or anything, it also hadn't had anybody in it, or any electronic devices on, so it was reasonably cool overall.

I unpacked my suitcase, piled up all my haul of meemaws, doohickeys and widgets and surveyed what I'd bought during the trip...

In addition to the stuff from The Bookshop, I had the aforementioned Aral Backpack from Caterpillar, a bookmark and a couple of keyrings from the Opera House (the red one was actually free because we spent a certain amount), five different bookmarks from the Visitors Centre in The Rocks and a magnetic bookmark from the Chinese Gardens... so basically, the trip was very much about The Bookmark... well I do have something of a collection, and I do use an awful lot of them.

Once I'd sorted out my junk, Ma gave me my birthday presents (which she'd brought down on Tuesday morning and left here), which was somewhat anticlimactic after everything else we'd done during the day... which consisted of the latest Harry Potter movie, North by Northwest, some Mythbusters episodes we picked up cheap and a few books. But then, the trip was partially a birthday present too...

Then we hooked up my digital camera, and then Ma's, to the teevee with the cord I discovered the week before we left and went through all of our photos... it was kind of cool, but also kind of freaky to get to display them on the big, big screen like that...

And since neither of us had the supplies or the wherewithal to be bothered making anything food related we went out to dinner on O'Connell Street and shared a plate of salt and pepper squid... then I sent Ma home and kind of spent the rest of the evening noodling around on the internet, catching up with various bit and pieces...

Thus endeth the Holiday...
