Fifteen Fringe shows down... six to go.

Technically it should only be five, but I bought another ticket for the end of next week.

I also learned a valuable lesson in The Garden of Unearthly Delights last night... unless you want a line to form, don't stand still outside the venue. I did that 45 minutes before Soap started and within a couple of minutes there were half a dozen groups of people standing behind me.

Today I had something of a unexpected and slightly confronting conversation with Rockchick at work... I said some things out loud that I've only started realising lately. I'm still workshopping the thoughts... but they're kind of out there in the world now.

On a totally unrelated note, I also discovered the new girl at work is a street art fan... so that's always fun.

lunchtime mr sloppy hunt

mr sloppy lunchtime hunt that contains adult content mr sloppy!

Last year it took me about five months to hunt down about twenty versions of Mr Sloppy...

This year I've already found sixteen and I've only been looking for three days.

Today it was a wander from Victoria Square, through Topham Mall, down to Hindley Street and then back up to Franklin Street.

Obviously they're much more plentiful this year! I'm just a little disappointed they don't seem to be as individualised or personalised this time. There's no pink, orange or blue coloured variants... at least not yet. I mean there is the spraycan/paste up variants... but it's not the same.

Also, this happened...

eyebird off hindleyAbout half a dozen or so of these little birdies with various coloured eyes are now loose on the streets of Adelaide.

Let me know if you see any... I really have no idea how long the stickum on the back of them works... or how well.

Although I really do need to either not put them up in the middle of the day or just be more observant about who's around. I haven't been especially subtle on a couple of occasions.

It's officially that time of year again... both the Fringe and the Street Dreams mascot, Mr Sloppy, have invaded the city of Adelaide.

This year's Mr Sloppy has a completely new look... he's what I'm calling Chibi Sloppy... and he appears to be available in a range of sizes. Plus there are at least two... the regular red one and the blue "paste up" variant.

The smaller size seems to have made Mr Sloppy much more plentiful... these are all from one walk from King William Street down to the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

He also seems more... mischievous this year... last year was friendly if a little dopey... but this year he's definitely up to no good!

yani's big adventure - day nine

outpost on cockatoo island the bus will be covered in street art by the end of the project
Well, that's it... holiday's over... back to real life!

*le sigh*

I will say that I think we had one of the better final days of any of our recent trips.

I packed my suitcase last night, although I'm not sure how... it was like a really soft and squishy game of Tetris. Essentially my clothes were used as packing around my purchases. And for the first time my suitcase was a little hard to close.

It still weighs less than Ma's suitcase though.

After I got up and got ready I did the usual "wander around every room making sure I haven't forgotten anything" interpretive dance. Then loaded myself up with bags, hats, shoes, jackets (okay, hat and jacket, but still) and tromped down to Ma's room as per the Final Day Tradition.

Our plan to head down to the Opera House for breakfast came to naught given that nothing really seems to be properly open down there at 7am. I guess there's not a lot of through traffic at that time in the morning, but still...

We ended up back at Circular Quay at the café in the foyer of the AMP Building, Mirabelle (although someone needs to tell them we don't do music on websites anymore). Other than the fact that the food took a little while to arrive, it was quite nice, plus I stole about 10MB of their free WiFi (downloading an update to a malfunctioning app).

We'd been going backwards and forwards about heading over to Cockatoo Island for the Outpost Project street art installation out on the island. I also used the free WiFi to download a copy of the appropriate ferry timetable, so we figured we could ride out there, wander around for a while and be back in time to get to the airport a little early.

Turned out to be the perfect idea, and I'm so very glad that we did it.

beastman on the wharf... my favourite piece of the whole island creepy and daek go to tea
Once we were done with breakfast we went back to the hotel, checked out of our rooms officially (by which I mean left our keys with one of the cleaners), stored our bags and headed back to Circular Quay to catch the ferry out to the island.

Instead of one of the slow (but beautiful) green and tan ferries, we got one of the fast "Fantasea" boats, which was something different... plus we've never been on a ferry in that direction before, so that was good too.

Cockatoo Island itself is awesome... it's industrial and big and full of interesting things to photograph, even before the addition of the street art. But with the street art... wow. It's the perfect blend of artistic style and location, and I got a little giddy taking photos.

the dog-leg tunnel gallery skull etc etc
The highlight was probably the Dog-Leg Tunnel (above), complete with not only works by street artists hung on boards between the pillars but also these intriguing sound installations (and an eerie video installation off in a room on the side).

It's just a shame that we were there on the opening morning (a little like Sculpture By The Sea really)... Outpost is going to be one of those exhibitions/festivals/projects that evolve between now and Decemeber... things will be added, pieces of work will change, the whole experience could transform itself.

But if you're in Sydney between now and December and you're at all interested in street art, please go! It would be so amazing if it became a yearly event.

I even saw some work from home... my blobby little buddy Mr Sloppy made an appearance amongst the paste-ups. In fact His Sloppiness also turned up in the laneways of Melbourne...

mr sloppy in melbourne mr sloppy at outpost
I also left my mark as part of the Chalk Walk...

yani's chalk eyebirdI may need to refine that as a piece actually... I know I had a version in one of my notebooks... but how exactly does one go about getting things printed en mass to vinyl sticker form? Hmmm...

We caught the ferry back just before noon, which went back a different way and stopped at a few more points.

I've possibly said it before, but that really is a civilised way to travel... much more interesting and classier than a train or a bus.

And, really, that was about it... we went straight from the ferry to the hotel and from there to a taxi and from there to the airport.

*sad face*

industrial girl green burger
There was a minor hiccup when we got to the airport, there wasn't a gate number against our flight... now I don't know if that happens often, but given that we've flown about twice a year for the last three years, that's never happened before. Freaked me out a tiny little bit I have to say, so after we'd grabbed a quick bite to eat and found somewhere to sit, I went and stared at the Departures board until it finally updated with our gate number.

Thank fuck!

Now I'm finishing writing this on the plane after watching the So You Think You Can Dance results show...

Then the plane will land and I'll have to go back to my regular old life.

Later...

Yep, that's pretty much what happened... the plane landed, we collected our luggage and then had to sit in the back of a very hot taxi all the way back to North Adelaide thanks to Friday afternoon traffic.

Note to self: Don't fly home at 4pm on a Friday... just don't.

When I got home again everything was pretty much as I'd left it. Okay, everything was exactly where I'd left it... otherwise that's just weird. And the apartment was mercifully cool.

I half-unpacked and then sent Ma on her way with my suitcase and associated bits and pieces before arranging all the bits and pieces I'd bought during the past nine days for their photoshoot...

my haul... including some of the stuff I bought for ma for christmasNo matter how many times I travel, I always have to take this photo about 10 times, there's always more things that I forgot to add to it and have to keep taking it as I remember them all.

There's a few things in there for Ma for Christmas, and a few situational things, like the 3D glasses from Sydney Tower Eye, the card for the camera strap (since I was using it), the free tissues from Kinokuniya and the receipt for the Aquabump print which should show up some time next week.

I do seem to come back with more stuff from Sydney than anywhere else though... or else we stay longer in Sydney, so I just accumulate more stuff.

Once I was done I wandered off to the supermarket to get some food because I had pretty much nothing in the fridge.

And with that, everything was about the same as it was before I left. Oh, and my hot water went out for the 500th time of late while I was away, so I'll have to try and fix that in the morning.

photo friday: blue mr sloppy

blue mr sloppy goes to chinatownBehold! The rare blue Mr Sloppy! I knew there was a blue one around, and a recent photo tipped me off to where I might find it.

It's been an odd week... out on Monday night... movies on Tuesday night... my knee has been playing up all week so I skipped the gym today... and Glamazon left The Nut House for pastures new, so we had a group lunch on Thursday.

Oh, and when I went out to drive to the photography course on Monday night only to discover that my car's battery seemed to have died, so I had to take a very expensive taxi. And tomorrow is going to entail a bunch of pfaffing around getting a new battery, complicated by the fact Ma is having her hair cut tomorrow morning.

My knee is somewhat concerning... it's weird because it seems to be fine when I'm using it in a straight line, it's more either turning or getting started that's the problem. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing at the gym, or my newish gym shoes or even something as stupid as the fact I've changed brands of glucosamine tablets.

Hopefully nothing else goes screwy over the weekend...

leftover mr sloppyJust when you think they're all gone, another Mr Sloppy appears! I'm guessing he's left over from Fringe... but he could be new...

When I'm talking to Pretty Trainer Boy at the gym, it's sometimes very difficult to remember not to just stare into his eyes... he's so pretty and so sweet... urgh... stupid straight boy crush...

For some reason it doesn't actually feel like the Friday before a long weekend... it hasn't all day really... although given that we have a big weekend of Cabaret Festival things, the extra day will be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I may or may not currently have a bunch of my photos on display/for sale in a gallery... it's just a test run to see how it goes... but you never know.

photo friday: mr sloppy under glass

mr sloppy under glassJust when I thought there couldn't be any new Mr Sloppys, I spotted this last week as I was leaving town after my haircut...

Sad that I remember when that store used to be a cute little second hand clothes shop!

Today has been... challenging...

Not necessarily a hellish day or a day when I was out of my depth... just a day where I kinda feel like I took a stoopid pill and everything all came back to land on my plate at once. Which is only fair really, since before today I didn't really do a whole hell of a lot with this project (which is just as well too, since everything I'd already done got canned and replaced with an idea I suggested).

And the stoopid pill part came in because I was feeling a little flustered I think... I deleted something I shouldn't have... I ran reports over the top of other reports because I hadn't changed the file name... I called somebody a bunch of names (not so they could hear, naturally) because they clearly didn't know what the hell they were talking about, only to discover that I hadn't actually run that particular process.

You know... stoopid pill stuff.

We've all been a little punchy this week I think... the end of a project that keeps getting whittled down and removed from our control... and I think we're all very glad to see the back of it.

It's also somewhat confronting when a guy you've only ever really thought of as "general background" at work (nobody in my immediate team thankfully) shows up in a particular pair of jeans and a particular teeshirt that make you look at him and go... "Hello Mr DILF!"

They were very, very, very good jeans...

Speaking of which, one of the pairs of jeans I bought last weekend seem to be cut kinda low in the back and high in the front for no logical reason that I can think of... surely it would make more sense to cut them in exactly the opposite way... but no. So I realised at lunch that I may very well have been flashing ass crack at the world for the previous 20 minutes. Not flattering.

And now I'm going to make quiche for dinner... mmmmm...

Just when I thought I'd run out of finding new instances of Mr Sloppy... I find these two...

They're actually from last Wednesday when I was on my way to see the 100Bucks&Runnin exhibition... I knew there was a reason I ended up having to park so far away!

It's just a shame about the temporary wire fence...
