Melbourne, then Brisbane then Sydney...

There's a lot going on in my head at the moment... not much of which is good...

Which is kind of stupid, because there's good stuff coming... but just at the moment I'm...

Okay, I'm not going to go all the way into this, because I know I get bored with other people's blogs and things when they spend all of the time complaining, and if you don't want to bother, stop here and just enjoy the pictures...

Angry... I'm just angry. For no real reason. Well, no good, big, important reason. Lots of small, stupid, pointless reasons.

Right... just got to think positive things. My "pay rise" should show up in my pay tomorrow (even though I still have no idea how much it is), I have a haircut on Friday at Tink's place, first Fringe show on Saturday, a BIG bag of Lego minifigs on their way from Hong Kong, I had a lovely chat with the girl in the Crumpler store and a new option for another larger camera bag... and on top of that, new Chibi Mr Sloppys to find.

Oh, and I just bought front row seats to see Kim David Smith when he returns for the Cabaret Festival... expensive, "Premium" front row tickets... because after last time, there's no way I was going to miss out.

Fortunately it's the weekend after Ma's birthday, so I've told her to mark the evening in her diary but haven't told her (yet) what it is.

And speaking of which, it's my birthday in a month...

On the eve of Australia Day... here's a collection of the places I've been around the country in the last twelve months. Which I actually find really, really amazing given that distinct lack of travelling for the first 30 years of my life.

I'm also slightly freaking out that this time next week I'll be packing my bag for Melbourne. And then less than two weeks after we get back, the Fringe starts! February is going to be massive!

This bout of hot weather seems to be eating away at both my brain and my patience like acetone dissolving styrofoam. Normally I would suggest I wasn't sleeping well because of the heat, but it's not like I have trouble getting to sleep and I'm not waking up during the night. I just think that maybe the quality of the sleep I am having isn't so great.

Or maybe it's just that the world is full of petty annoyances...

Like the fact that my employment agency is making me fill out every single bit of paperwork again as though I was starting with them for the first time. So I spent about 45 minutes this morning filling my name in about a dozen times on various bits of paper. On a number of them I really just wanted to write "see the previous forms because nothing has actually changed".

And the fact that when it's hot like this I just don't want to be bothered tidying the house up, so it all feels a little blah.

Although the world is also full of things that are good...

Like the fact that the sixth series of the Lego Minifigs is finally available in Australia! I knew this because Ma brought me two figures yesterday, so today I figured I'd head over the Myer just to see if they had them in yet. Turns out they did and there was a woman standing at the counter with one of the staff going through and essentially feeling the packs looking for certain ones.

I could have hovered around waiting for her to go but instead I walked up said "can I join in?"... because I'm as tragic as hell. Fortunately there was a second box so I spent about 20 minutes of my lunch break going through and feeling up EVERY! SINGLE! PACK! in both of the boxes to try and find the ones I wanted from this series. And I think ever single staff member from the toy department wandered past while I was doing it and asked if I needed any assistance... and I was all "no, I'm good, just feeling up the merchandise".

It turned out to be a good plan because not only was Myer having a "buy 2 get 1 free" sale on everything in the toy department, but out of the six I bought, three of them were the ones that I specifically wanted (one was okay, the other two were duplicates). Of course, because I was nice and handed over a couple of the ones that the other woman was looking for (for her daughter... so she was after the girl/female figures), I still need to stand around and feel some more packs to try and find the others.

And even though the cool change doesn't come in until Saturday afternoon, I'm still going to enjoy having the day off tomorrow for Australia Day. Not that I really care about the actual day, but hopefully I can get the house a little cooler.

I do like a nice bit of green for the spring template... And there's nothing quite like water frozen in a photograph...

Oy... what an atypical day!
  • Went to a two and a half hour session on accessible web documents hosted by a French woman with an accent that was occasionally unintelligible... the irony was possibly lost of a number of people there.
  • My lunch consisted of picking up Subway on the way back to the office.
  • I had a meeting this afternoon I really wasn't prepared for which wasn't helped by the fact the person I was meeting with hadn't prepared the material we were meeting about and neither of us was completely sure what some of it meant.
  • After doing the Grindr Message Ping Pong on and off all day with a young gentleman we met up outside work and went for a wander... it was all disturbingly like we were 15.
  • I'm making soup for dinner.
That's about it really.

Some more shots from Brisbane... I think one is from the Botanical Gardens and the other is the Roma Street Parklands.

Urgh... first week back after leave... I say urgh. I've done more stuff this week than usual, as well as catching up on all the stuff that I missed while I was away.

And I swear that I'm the only one at work with a fully functional immune system... everyone else has been off sick for at least part of the week.

Can you tell I'm feeling a trifle under-appreciated? *sigh* Not unappreciated... but the occasional "good job, you" wouldn't hurt. I know they think it, but it's nice to hear.

Other than being about annoying people, today has also been about tickets...

I'm heading off to see Macbeth (yes, again) by the University of Adelaide Theatre Guild on Tuesday next week... and there's a ticket related surprise coming up later this evening... so keep your eyes peeled for that one.

But both my brain and my belly are empty... so I'm going to go and make some dinner...

Well it's taken me most of the afternoon/evening to make with the photo editing, but my five Brisbane posts are now online...
I have to say that I was fairly underwhelmed by Brisbane as a whole.

I can't see us making a return trip there any time soon. Even the weather doesn't really work for me... sure, sunshine is nice in moderation, but temperatures in the low 20's in the middle of Winter really isn't for me.

As I said in one of the posts I also the shopping was disappointing ... it's not really why we go on these trips, but it woulda been nice to at least have had some interesting shops to poke around in.

Even my tweets under the #YBH11 hashtag got a little bit lackluster as the holiday went on...

And that, as they say in the classics, is that... four days, four nights, 1468 photos, over 7000 words written and our Brisbane trip is over.

We actually gave up earlier than we needed to... but then we'd seen everything there was to see, been everywhere we needed to be and pretty much walked our feet down to, at least in my case, blistered and sore little stubs.

As a brief aside, I hate these new sneakers. Combined with reasonably new socks, they let my feet slide all over the place, hence the blisters. Grrr... And it's not like my previous pair of the same brand did that... I walked all over Sydney with them and didn't have the least problem.

After receiving the Act of Courtly Man Love last night and finishing up my blog post, I decided to pack up my suitcase. While I pretty much always get a gold star for packing when we're going somewhere, the return trip's packing is made to sit in the corner with a dunce's cap on. Effective, but nowhere near as elegant or organised coming back.

It's always a little sad when you pack up a hotel room, and the only thing that shows that anyone's been in it is the fact the bed needs to be made.

When I got up this morning I packed the last bits and pieces, got ready and as always seems to be the case on our last day anywhere, I dragged the whole kit and caboodle down to Ma's room so that we only had to worry about one space.

I'd been checking out The Thousands app on my phone last night and found a couple of possibilities for breakfast... one that sounded very chic/special and one that was a little more pedestrian. We ended up picking the more pedestrian of the two mostly because it called Bagel Nook... and who doesn't love a bagel?

It turned out to be somewhere we'd wandered past yesterday... or at least wandered past the entrance to the laneway. And other than the fact that it was kind of chilly in that particular spot, breakfast was nice. I had a fruit bagel with cream cheese, banana and honey while Ma had one that was supposed to have strawberries and kiwi fruit (along with the aforementioned cream cheese and honey), but due to the lack of kiwi fruit, they made it with banana instead. Which was kind of a better deal I think, given the price of bananas currently.

After breakfast we did some half-hearted wandering and ended up at King George Square. We ended up being a little entranced by this group of people dressed in white overalls dancing around in a little fenced off square of grass complete with orange trees and hay bales. At first I thought they were spruiking some sort of cleaning product with oranges, but it turned out to be little bottles of orange juice.

Now normally with those types of promotions, if you have six people as part of the event you have six people giving away orange juice... but no, four of them appeared to be drama students (or dance students, one of them was doing some kick ass pirouettes (or whatever they're called when a male dancer does them), and two of them were rampantly overacting the process of putting oranges from one crate into a wheelbarrow, moving the barrow over to another crate and then taking the oranges out again. It was still early, so I'm guessing they wouldn't be able to keep that up all day.

Anyway, Ma and I stood in the square for a while, being generally amused by the whole situation, especially the number of people who didn't seem to want to be bothered with getting something for free (although every time the collected masses worked out that it was free there was a brief surge of interest).

Eventually I couldn't resist any longer... and strode purposefully over in search of free OJ.

The girl saw me coming and called out to me asking if I wanted juice... and because I wasn't just a walk-by she was able to give me a little bit of her spiel... it seems that the secret to Grove Juice is the fact that it comes in a while plastic bottle... it "keeps all the vitamins in"... which sounded frankly insane until she said that it's because it keeps the sunlight out.

Sounds reasonable to me really.

The upshot of this overly long ramble about Grove Juice orange juice? It's actually awesome stuff... really, really thick and really tasty. Not sure if it's going to make it to SA, but if it does, I may have to keep an eye out for it.

After "The Orange Juice Incident", we wandered without much rhyme or reason through Queen Street Mall AGAIN, turned in the opposite direction from the hotel and wound up in Brisbane Square to find it completely transformed.

Now, we'd been through Brisbane square both last night and the night before, and we've been through or around there a number of times, and at no point do I remember seeing anything that said that they hold Farmers Markets (more specifically the Jan Powers Farmers Market) there.

But the entire square was crammed with stalls and people selling all manner of fruit and vegetables, breads, speciality products... everything you could want out of a farmer's market really. It’s the kind of thing that I wish they could do in Adelaide... maybe upstairs in the Festival Centre Plaza, or in the Mall, or even Victoria Square (although that might be too close to the Central Markets).

What's better than being able to wander through the city on your lunch break and buy fresh fruit and veg that according to one of the guys I overheard had only come out of the ground that morning, as well as being able to buy it pretty much directly from the people who grew it. It's a fucking awesome concept. And good on Jan Powers, I say!

It's just unfortunate that we're not allowed to bring any fruit or veg into SA, because we could have bought a heap of stuff.

As it was I couldn't resist buying two very large packs of very lush looking Rocky Road from the very handsome young gentleman at the Noosa Chocolate Factory... and we got a few macarons from an attractive young Spanish gentleman, a couple of which (mmm salted caramel) didn't even make it out of the square.

By that point it was almost check out time at the hotel, so we wandered on back, hauled the seemingly 1500kg of luggage. My poor Crumpler bag... it was so crammed with stuff, including my netbook, all the Rocky Road, my blind box purchases and my jacket that I had to use the clips to close it... and even then there wasn't a square inch of room left in it.

We also had some strawberries left over that neither of us were really bothered about, and obviously we couldn't take them home, so we decided to take them downstairs and give them to the nice girly on the desk.

Which we did... she was so cute too, Ma asked her if she'd like the strawberries and she looked a little undecided... I actually thought that she was going to say no (that she couldn't accept gifts from customers or something), but she kind of ducked her head and said "yes please" really coy and quietly. Hehehe... very cute.

Then, once again proving that the city of Brisbane is filled to the brim with homosexualists, she got the guy who was also there to take out bags into the store room... and when he saw Ma's virulently pink hard shell case he said "Oh, I’ll be having that one"... yes, dear, I'm sure you will be.

That done, we really didn't have much else we really wanted to do, so we headed back to the Brisbane Crumpler store which we'd passed earlier in the morning before it was open. I know, I know... how many more Crumpler products does a person need... but mostly they had some stuff I hadn't seen before, and we really didn't have much else to do.

The guy in the store was sweet (and quite cute... which has been a recurring theme here in Brisbane) and we walked crap about Crumpler for a little bit, he showed me a few options for netbooks (none of which are really grabbing me), showed me the very sexy new one of a kind limited edition versions of my big red Crumpler bag... mmmm exclusive.

After that we went to sit in Anzac Square for a little bit and ate the other two macarons. And after all that, I think it was actually only about 10:30am. So much day to fill, so few things left to do.

kurilpa lines sky illusion
I perused the map for a bit and figured that we could actually wander over to GOMA on South Bank via the Kurilpa Bridge... unfortunately, what the map ever actually shows you is when streets are very, very steep... which a couple of the streets were... not so good on tired feet.

Thankfully the bridge is covered, so we weren't out in the sunshine (Ma was okay, she had her sexy little white hat, but I'd foolishly packed my $4 hat in my bag last night)... and it was a nice enough walk once we got to the bridge.

goma balls surreal neon
GOMA itself wasn't bad... although it felt a little weird that you're allowed to take photos (no flash photography, obviously), there were certain rooms we went in where I just didn't feel comfortable photographing things. And I was convinced that they were going to ask me to stop at any second.

And because they had the Surrealism exhibition on, a whole section of the gallery was closed off, so we managed to see everything fairly swiftly.

After that we wandered back along towards the Melbourne Street Bridge, around the Museum and whatnot, and managed to see a bunch of stuff that we hadn't seen last time we were there, like the Whale Mall and I reshot a few of the things we'd seen last night when we were wandering around on that side of the bridge.

whale walk black pelican
We finally wandered back over the bridge it was about lunch time, so the Farmer's Market was absolutely heaving with people... always my favourite thing (not).

We stopped at the Cornish Pasty Man stall and got a couple of, unsurprisingly, Cornish pasties... Ma said hers was good, but I had the "cheese and bacon" one... not a fan.

And then we wandered back down the Queen Street Mall for the very last time, ate our pasties and decided that we were officially done with Brisbane... our feet hurt, and we really couldn't be bothered trying to find something else to entertain ourselves for the next couple of hours.

So we made it back to the hotel, picked up our bags and wandered across the street to the conveniently placed taxi rank and ended up with a big ass taxi van. A little excessive for two people and two suitcases, but what the hell.

I liked the whole automatic check in process a lot more the second time... now that I knew what the hell I was doing. I still say that it's less helpful for first time users though.

And while the check in process went quickly, the line to go through security was a tiny bit redonkulous.

After dithering around finding a seat, then looking for a better seat, then once the plane before ours left realising that we had pretty much our pick of seats, Ma and I both got out our netbooks and here we are, typing away at our last day's journals... mine for the blog, hers for... well, for whatever she keeps them for.

But now the plane is here... so if you'll excuse me...

[Some time later]

And now I'm home! The plane ride was great, wasn't the least bit nauseous (which is new this trip... either it's the longer flight, or it's because I stared out the window at the ground until the pilot turned off the seatbelt sign... I really don't know).

Once we made it to my place we went out for pizza, since neither of us could be bothered with preparing food on our own, and now she's on her way home.

This is my travel haul...

brisbane stuffAnd as you can see, there's not much. And most of it came from Comics Etc. The brown bag at the back is half of the Rocky Road (I was afraid the other half would slide off and wipe out all the figurines). And there is a reason the blue Bearbrick is still in the plastic bag is that it's the blue/dead version of the Laura Palmer/Twin Peaks design... you know... "wrapped in plastic"...

So now that that's all out of the way, I can sit in my little red chair and (mostly) relax... transfer these Word documents to Blogger, drag the 1440 files from my camera (well, actually 1468, there are a bunch of photos of clouds and airplane wings from the flight there and the flight back) and maybe watch TV for the first time since Saturday morning.

Then tomorrow I need to go and get some food, pull together my overall thoughts on this trip and make with some hardcore photo editing.

Coming back to reality after a holiday is always a bit of a bump.

brisvegas: day four

The watchword of this morning was "Nothing"... that's pretty much exactly the amount of an idea I had about what we were doing today... nothing, nothing, nothing.

My mood was decidedly apathetic when I woke up, and fiddling around with my phone didn't help a whole lot.

I didn't even know what I felt like for breakfast... never mind what we were going to do with the rest of the day.

Breakfast turned out to be reasonably easy to solve once we actually got outside of the hotel and wandered about a bit... I just picked a direction like I knew where the hell I was going (the direction we generally don't go for some reason, and while we were walking I remembered this little vegetarian place down on Eagle Street... Kitchen Sanitarium.

Turned out to be a good idea, even if they didn't do coffee... Ma and I both had the Brioche French Toast with poached raspberries and yoghurt. Very tasty, and nowhere near as heavy as I was expecting it to be.

I still content that the only guys working in the food service industry in Brisbane are homosexualists though... sweet and helpful, but so very gay.

Since we were up at that end of the city, we figured we may as well just wander down to Fortitude Valley. I can now say that I've seen The Valley... or at the very least I've seen Chinatown and the Brunswick Street Mall.

valley peaks dragon scales
How best to describe them?

Chinatown appears to be more or less the one street, pretty much like Adelaide's Chinatown... although like everything else in Brisbane, it seems to have been overly themed and architectured to within an inch of its life.

The other thing that kind of amazed me was that most of it was shut. Sure it was still fairly early, and yes, a large proportion of the places were restaurants... but it felt particularly barren.

Contrast that with the Brunswick Street Mall... which was full of people... but it was pretty damn dodgy, and I wanted to spend as little time there as humanly possible.

The only up side to The Valley was the fact that I finally found some honest to god street art! And featuring at least one artist that I recognised. I should have known that I'd need to go to the dodgy part of the city before I starting finding street art.

bowery no progress
Oddly enough, my first thought was that it felt like coming home. Weird, I know.

After that Ma got it into her head that she wanted to head over to Spring Hill. I'm not exactly sure why... and especially because as the Hill part of the name suggests, it was all up hill. And we hadn't bothered to bring our hats with us (that morning weather is deceptive, but mostly I blame Ma). And other than a community radio station totally covered in Beastman street art, there wasn't a whole lot of anything during the very, very long walk along St Pauls Terrace.

And then the seemingly even long walk along Leichardt Street...

very tiny bird standing tall
It was kinda worth it in the end though... because at the end of that particular Boring Brick Road is the Roma Street Parkland... which almost feels like Botanical Gardens Lite... more structured and with more places to play and hold events and stuff, but still very pretty.

Being that we were sans hats, we didn't do much wandering other than the Spectacle Garden... but there were a whole slew of photo opportunities there, especially once I strapped on my 300mm lens again.

There's something weird about the Queensland sun... whether it's because it's both further north and further east or not I don't know... but I've been really shit at judging the time based on sun position during this trip. I was sure that we'd been in the Parkland for a good long while and it must have been at least 2pm, but no, it wasn't even noon by that point.

big waterfall i have no idea what kind of mutant bee this is, but it was enormous
By the time we eventually left the Parkland it felt like late afternoon, but wasn't quite 1pm (and I only really remember that because the clock in King George Square struck 1pm while we were there.

Because we were a world of thirsty and hungry by that point, we stopped at Groove Train and had Caesar Salad. Now, I'm not really a Food Nazi, but if Caesar Salad has a poached egg on top of it, it should be hot right... as should the bacon? Yeah, not so much in this salad... I think the egg was a leftover from breakfast. But it wasn't bad otherwise, and it did arrive at the table fairly quickly... so I can't complain too much.

After lunch we wandered in the general direction of the hotel, but detoured up to Comics Etc for the third and (probably) final time... this blind box stuff is addictive... especially when it's so easy to get your hands on.

And given that it's really the only thing that I've bought that isn't food on this trip, I think I'm allowed.

Anyway, we detoured back to the hotel to drop off our purchases and couldn't really decide what the hell we wanted to do next. That really only seems to be a major problem when we're in the hotel, so we headed back out again and ended up wandering around the Myer Centre across the street.

Not especially inspiring, but I have to say that the shopping in the Brisbane CBD leaves a lot to be desired... everything just seems to be very similar to the stuff we have back in Adelaide. A few regional variations here and there... but no cute little laneways or arcades with funky little shops in them like Melbourne... not the sheer number of stores like Sydney... it has all been very m'eh.

I did find the Daria boxed set in the ABC Shop... and I while I know it's been around in Adelaide, I haven't seen it yet, so I snapped it up!

After that we kind of just traipsed from one lacklustre shopping arcade to another, mostly by following the "avoid going up" rule of city orienteering... neither of us were really that impressed with climbing any more.

Eventually we both gave up and made it back to the hotel (after a quick detour for a couple of Krispy Kreme donuts) for our "Pre Dinner Rest".

The first trip I ever took to Melbourne, I left the hotel first thing in the morning and pretty much didn't even stop by again until after dinner... on the go, all day long... but these last few trips, we do like a nice rest in the afternoon. And yes, it's partly because I'm travelling with Ma... but we do a hell of a lot of walking on these trips, and my feet are currently covered with all manner of interesting blisters (stupid new sneakers).

Another quick aside... I've now officially had three male escorts hit on me via iPhone apps this trip.

It doesn't bother me or anything... it's just worth mentioning.

brisbane sunset light cicada
After our little rest, we headed back across the river to South Bank... Ma was in the mood for seafood for dinner, so we headed over to check out a restaurant, Decks, we'd seen both times we'd been over there.

I wasn't sure about it since I hadn't actually seen anybody in it any of the other times we wandered past... turns out it was just a little on the pricey side. And foolishly, we looked at the wrong menu outside (the lunch menu instead of the dinner one) and found something that sounded really nice and wasn't an arm and a leg... but when we sat down and perused the menu it obviously wasn't there, and there really wasn't anything else on the menu that sounded half as interesting.

We had actually decided to leave and go somewhere else, and Ma mentioned to the older gentleman that had seated us (who may or may not have been the owner/manager) that she'd been more interested in something on the (lunch) menu outside... and I'm guessing because they may not get a lot of customers, he said there wasn't any reason we couldn't have it. Which I thought was very nice of him! And it turned out to be a very good choice... very tasty. So you have to be happy with that.

After dinner we wandered back along South Bank, trying to avoid all the joggers and cyclists who seem to be out in force, possibly practising for some big run next weekend.

And as though to prove that sometimes you need to leave the Universe alone and let it do its own thing... after spending three evenings playing iPhone ping pong with a number of gentlemen (with varying degrees of enthusiasm... both on my part and their's), I found myself with a young gentleman caller who proceeded to show me exactly what Queensland men are made of.

*insert suggestive eyebrow waggling here*

A fitting end to our Brisbane holiday really... although we kind of have to find something to occupy our time for a big chunk of the day tomorrow too. I foresee another somewhat early ride to the airport.

I'll say this for you Brisbane, I may not be able to orient myself on your streets yet, but you have some mighty fine looking men wandering around...

But beyond that my opinion of you hasn't really changed from yesterday... I did manage to not get heat stroke this time though.

Today has been a mixture of sightseeing and shopping... well, when I say shopping... being in places where shops are is probably more accurate.

First thing this morning was more or less a repeat of yesterday, except I got up earlier, got ready earlier and we were out the door by about 8am (even though I had to fix Ma's hair due to shampoo/conditioner malfunction).

Breakfast this morning was Starbucks... not exactly five star, but it was quick, easy and directly across the road from the hotel. I was kind of impressed though... I'd picked up both drinks and was waiting, along with a bunch of other people, at the counter for the food and the barista girl not only checked to make sure I wasn't waiting on another drink, but she actually called me by name again when she did it... it's the small things that make good customer service really.

After breakfast and a brief moment of poking around the Myer Centre, we wandered off on one of the "self-guided walking tours" we got on one of the maps at the Visitors Centre yesterday... the Art and Architecture Walk, naturally.

Just as another brief aside... I think Brisbane very definitely takes the cake for "statues of the human form"... you don't seem to be able to go anywhere without running into some human shaped piece of public art... kinda strange really...

Some of the stuff on the walking trail we'd already seen yesterday, but other bits and pieces were worth going hunting for. We didn't really follow the trail, we cherry picked bits and pieces, wandered down the Queen Street Mall (stopping off briefly at possibly the best Toy World ever... vinyl figures galore!), found the scrap metal kangaroos, got a little bit lost trying to find one or two other things on the map, but eventually ended up back at Anzac Square.

anzac statue conversation
I really do have a lot of trouble reading any or all of the maps we have... and I just can't seem to get the layout of the streets right in my head... do we turn left on Albert to get to Queen Street, or right?

It's not helped by Brisbane City Council, since it seems like the majority of intersections either only have street signs for one direction (ie, they'll have Albert Street, but not the cross street), or no street signs at all. Very annoying.

There are bits that I'm okay with... like as soon as I see the Burger King on the corner of Queen Street Mall and Albert Street, I know which way the hotel is... and I know where to go to get to South Bank when we hit the end of Elizabeth Street... other than that I'm pretty hopeless.

I think that's kind of why I'm having trouble remembering what we did in what order...

I do know that from Anzac Square we crossed over to Queen Street and stopping into JB HiFi... because I always have to stop into JB, just to check on whether they have a Gay Movie section, and if so, what’s in it... turns out that this one didn't... but Ma did find a DS game she's been wanting cheap, so it wasn't a total waste of time.

Then we went looking for the other comic book shop. From discussions with Sugarmonkey last week, I knew there was more than one, and I knew one was the good one and one was the bad one... except I couldn't remember which was which.

It would seem that Comics Etc that we went into yesterday was the good one... because when we did find the other one, it was very naff, and we only spent a couple of minutes in there.

But that led to a return visit to Comics Etc... Ma wanted more of the Doctor Who figurines she got yesterday and I wanted another go at the Futurama figures... turned out pretty well actually... Ma picked out three packs and got exactly what she wanted (actually she got two Daleks, a red and a blue, so I ended up with the blue one)... and I picked Bender Bending Rodriguez in the Futurama blind box, so I'm happy.

Of course that doesn't mean that we won't go back there again tomorrow...

After that we swung back to the hotel to drop stuff off, then headed back out with the slightly vague plan of getting a burger for lunch (you know, a good burger, not fast food)... we ended up back in the Queen Street Mall and after doing a little tyre kicking in a couple of stores first, I noticed that one of the eateries in the middle of the Mall did an organic beef burger, so we stopped there.

It turned out to be really nice... not too much or too fancy with too much stuff on it... but just enough.

While we were there, there was this older guy, sharply dressed in a nice suit and carrying a white paper shopping bag... and he was completely and utterly BAT SHIT CRAZY... he just seems to wander up and down the Mall, talking very loudly to everybody and nobody about some bat shit crazy stuff. He has an accent, so it's hard to understand exactly what he's ranting about... but clearly you never want to make eye contact with him... he appeared to have latched on to two guys walking up the Mall at one point. I'm pretty sure they weren't the least bit interested, but he just tagged along with them, telling them whatever his particular soap box is.

Suffice to say we avoided both eye contact and got out of earshot as quickly as possible.

Our next plan was to head down to the Botanical Gardens, so after a quick stop in Target to get a hat ($4... bargain) and some sunscreen... and a couple more bottles of that yummy juice from the food court, we set off...

And I have to say that I'm not only thankful for my 300mm zoom when photographing flora and fauna in the Botanical Garden setting, but also because it makes a very handy long distance perving device.

It helped that there were a fair few beautiful gentlemen wandering around the gardens too (which brings us back to the beginning of the post really)...

Also, using the zoom gives some really great shallow depth of field shots... of both greenery and men...

The original plan had been to head over to South Bank again, but we ended up deciding that it may be a better idea to do it for dinner once the sun was out of the way... so we wandered back to the hotel and had a little rest for about an hour... which my feet appreciated. I obviously haven't broken my new sneakers in properly yet, since I've got an array of blisters in interesting places...

Anyway, after we'd rested and the sun was starting to set we headed back over the bridge to South Bank. I took my camera, just to try it out with some evening/night/city lights shots... it actually worked out pretty well... some of the shots are probably a bit blurry, but they look pretty interesting.

We wandered along the side of the river, pretty much the reverse of the walk we did yesterday until we found a very handy illuminated sign listing all the restaurants in the area (handy!)... and one of them was Indian... woohoo...

So a couple of days after we arrived we finally had our Brisbane Indian dinner at Gandhi's Curry Hut... and it turned out to be very tasty too... we pretty much had the usual of rice and naan and Lamb Rogan Josh, but added a vegetable dish I can't remember the name of now... and just enough to enjoy without ending up stuffed.

Our last stop was Max Brenner... actually, to be honest, the whole second trip across to South Bank was so that we could visit Max Brenner. We ended up just having hot chocolate (I remembered later that the incredibly thick stuff I had when we were in Melbourne was actually the Italian hot chocolate), which also was just enough without being too rich.

And then back here for lots and lots of typing on my part...
