woolly and average saturday

It's been a bit of a wild and woolly day here... and the temperature graph on my iPhone is the weirdest I've ever seen... 16.4°C at 2am and 11.7°C at 5am... weirdness...

The general weirdness came from the wind though... boy has there been wind. And as I've been expecting every since I saw the forecast of wind earlier in the week, the pilot light on my hot water heater got knocked out at some point between about 8pm last night and 6am this morning... but given how windy it was when I got up I couldn't see the point in relighting it, since I'm sure I would just have had to do it again (and it seems like I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow morning... the wind was supposed to ease around lunchtime, but I don't think it did particularly)... so I resorted to the old standby of the Bucket Bath.

And I was highly disturbed to realise that I actually have it down to a science now (as in how much water to add and how to organise everything...

Anyway...

I dragged my alternately freezing and steaming self out of the bathroom, got rugged up nice and warm and sorted myself out... then around the time when I was trying to work out if there was any point in grabbing my book, Ma arrived.

The Supermarket Safari was about average... although I couldn't find some of the fresh stuff I wanted... so that'll require a trip to the Central Market some time this week I think.

Given the weather, our chosen destination was Marion... not with any particular plan in mind, just somewhere appropriately warm.

We did the usual wander around, picked up a few bits and pieces, then attempted to hit the food court to grab something to eat. I say attempted, because between the fact that neither of us knew what we wanted, didn't want very much and that people never look where they're going... as well as food court food always looking better (for the most part) than it inevitably ends up tasting... we didn't make a decision, so I threw in the towel and we didn't bother.

And because Ma had another social engagement to go to this afternoon, we pretty much left it at that.

So not a particularly thrilling day... but passable...

This is one of Ma's favourite shots from our last trip to Melbourne, and all because of the itty bitty little birdy...

Today started with a certain degree of panic and ended with a certain degree of boredom.

I overslept this morning... like "This is usually the time I should be getting ready" overslept... I had no time for breakfast, just threw myself in the shower, got dressed and headed off to work. In some ways it worked out okay, because I got to grab some porridge with caramelised banana from Grass Roots Organic on my way in. And while I probably could have done with sticking it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, it was damn tasty porridge!

The rest of my day was essentially fairly dull.

It does surprise me that people who are supposed to be good communicators but who work for government agencies for long enough lose the ability to be able to communicate effectively and everything starts to take on that "governmental" tone. Sadly there's no arguing with them, especially when you realise they don't really care about a better way to do things.

I made an apple crumble tonight... except I picked the wrong kind of muesli to make the crumble part and I overcooked the apples until they were snot. Even so it wasn't bad. I must remember to buy some rhubarb and a more interesting kind of muesli tomorrow...

See... this is how interesting my life is... porridge and apple crumble...

It's a little bit tragic that in 22 days I'll be in Melbourne again, but I haven't actually posted all of the processed images from last year's trip...

Granted, that was less than 12 months ago! Ma and I are turning into quite the gadabouts in her old age... although actually it's more to do with the fact that I'm earning money and can afford to do all this stuff.

I also don't think I'm going to taking quite as many photos of quite so many things this time around...

On the Saturday we're in Melbourne, after we've been to see:

Thanks to some scrabbling around on the Ticketmaster website first thing this morning, we're going to:

"The Regent Theatre was opened in 1929, its lavish opulence embodying the glorious fantasy and escapism of Hollywood, right in the heart of Melbourne."

And we'll be seeing:

"Stephen Fry will deliver a talk discussing travel, art, TV, the internet and Twitter over 90 minutes."

It appears like the stars are definitely aligning for this trip...

I'm getting very excited now!

Rain Makes You Happy

It's been a chilly Winter's shopping day... well, mostly...

But it feels like it's been a productive day!

I started off by changing my sheets this morning, and I'd tidied up the kitchen somewhat last night... so the place felt organised... although a little less so currently since there's crap all over the kitchen bench...

The Supermarket Safari was reasonably lite-on, but things were bought... including a cheap copy of Moon from Woolworths of all places... and things to satisfy my craving for toast with Vegemite and cottage cheese...

Once that was over I had an internal list of things I wanted to purchase, look for or otherwise find, and rather than heading off to Marion, we decided to his Arndale and West Lakes instead.

It seems to have been a REALLY long time since we were last at Arndale... supposedly, if mentions in my blog are to be taken as gospel, then February was the last time we were there together... although I don't think that's quite right somehow...

Part of my mission was to get some Little Golden Book Classics for Sugarmonkey Jr... partly because at some point Sugarmonkey said he wasn't aware of the more famous titles... so I sought some out and found The Saggy Baggy Elephant, Tootle, Tawny Scrawny Lion and The Poky Little Puppy... sadly I couldn't find Scuffy the Tugboat.

I also got more Bonds Slipper Socks... although these may be a little on the small side. I also tried on what can only be described as a "Bonds Foot Doona"... scariest thing I think I've ever put my foot into... and potentially dangerous! Plus I kinda felt like Sweetums from the Muppets...

And I may or may not have bought a Mock Snuggle in zebra print fabric for $8 from The Reject Shop...

Speaking of The Reject Shop though... it's amazing what you can find in there... a free standing set of "rabbit ears" for $6... bargain! And better than blu-tacking the previous set into an old glass soy sauce container filled with rice...

After Arndale we headed down to West Lakes...

I just have to say... for somebody who didn't "get" scarves this time last months, I now appear to have a scarf addiction... that's right, two more... different again from anything I currently have, but still... addiction much!

I also sprayed myself with a variety of fragrances in David Jones that were on special... and after wandering around for a while decided that the Versace Pour Homme seemed to be holding up the best... although not it seems that the Paco Rabanne Black XS is sticking around, but that is on the top of my wrist... I also quite like the new Burberry Sport fragrance, but that wasn't on special... but I may have to put that on my mental wishlist.

I'm possibly the only person in existence who, upon getting his hands on a 2 disc remastered special edition of A Nightmare on Elm Street, was somewhat disappointed because the cover/spine doesn't match the ones for movies 2-6 that I bought the other week...

Anyway... after a quite reasonable lunch from the West Lakes food court we headed back here and I cleaned out both my fridge and my freezer, discarding anything that appeared to be pteranodon meat from the Late Cretaceous period... or else was "unidentifiable frozen stuff in ziplock bags" (actually, Ma took a number of those of my hands to be honest)... so now I have a tidy, if somewhat empty fridge and freezer... woohoo!

I'm about to go and defrost the chicken stock I made last year (by boiling a chicken) and turn it into something passable...

I realised today that in a month from now I'll be back after a four day weekend in Melbourne... this month is going to drag so badly...

There have been a number of Melbourne related thoughts today actually...

• I unintentionally gave a test run to a "Melbourne outfit" today... black jeans, brown sweater over white teeshirt, grey & black scarf, black jacket and black shoes... that sounds kinda Melbourney, right?
• My Optimus Prime underwear is possibly going to be better in theory than in practice...
• I sometimes think that my building is a Stupidity Conductor and all the surrounding stupidity is attracted to it and concentrated!
• Turns out Stephen Fry is giving a talk in Melbourne on the same weekend that Ma and I will be there... Fate, kismet, destiny! And it's literally a block and a half around the corner from our hotel! Now I just need tickets!
• After a couple of tweets this morning, I'm now having trouble getting the idea of Kim Smith covering songs from The Little Mermaid out of my head...
• It would be nice to be able to blame the Tim Burton exhibition for the fact that I bought three Burton figurines at lunch today (Santa Jack plus Victor and The Corpse Bride), but I also bought three more of the Penguin Classics... and I don't have anything to blame them on...
• Sugarmonkey returns to The Nut House on Tuesday... I think it's going to require a little bit of readjustment...
• Currently it's warmer in Melbourne than it is here in Adelaide...
