my art collection

my art collection
One of the good things about having time on my hands currently is being able to go down my mental "I'll do that one day when I get around to it" list and checking things off left, right and centre.

From putting together bookcases, to baking cookies, to clearing out excess junk from my apartment... and the latest item was photographing my art collection and creating a blog to house the photos so I can keep track of it all.

And it felt like that was almost all I did yesterday. Granted I didn't start until after 10am when the light in my living room was perfect for taking photos, and it took me a couple of hours to unpack or unwrap or get each individual piece of art in position (and there were a couple that I forgot to do, so I had to add a few more this morning).

Then after lunch I went through and processed all the images, set up a private second blog and spent the whole afternoon going through old blog posts, receipts and the listing of Espionage's former shows so I could get the dates, prices and everything right.

While I said last week, in my post about the aforementioned Espionage's crowdfunding campaign, that I somehow became an art collector without exactly realising it, it isn't until I laid out everything in the blog (and there are four extra pieces that got added this morning) that I really realised how true that is.

Between commercial available prints, limited edition pieces, originals, commissions, vinyl toys and even wearable artworks, the collection runs the gamut of both artists, styles and media. Having said that, both Gary Seaman and Cameron Brideoake feature rather prominently (and I would never have discovered Cameron if it hadn't been for Josh at Espionage).

And interestingly, while I keep thinking that it's all packed away, after a quick head count just now I actually have about half of it out on display. Granted most of the stuff that isn't on display is the big stuff.

It also made me wish I had more than just the one Benzo piece, since that was really the one that started it all.

I was somewhat of two minds about the Winter template... I've gotten into the groove of doing something Lego related, and I did have something of an idea in that department.

But I also had this Benzo Bot image from the Bowden wander I did almost a year ago, and the full image is just the perfect size for a template. Plus I'd already dropped it into the template template, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

Oddly enough I do tend to gravitate a little towards blue templates for Winter...

The Toy Soldier Crew have invaded Topham Wall!

And these pictures explain exactly why I love their work so much.

It's a unified visual style, even though each piece is its own unique artwork, they've used a limited pallet, and all but one (okay, maybe two if you count the bat they left visible from the previous artwork) have a "space" theme. So it all ties in together.

You can see it more when viewing the whole piece in it's entirety but I think it comes across in the photos too.

I'm also loving this particular evolution of Benzo's work... it's somewhere between the "fire dancer" behind Light Square and the aquanaut from Glenelg... although I get a strong cyclist vibe from the piece. It is beautiful though, especially with the Kirbyesque use of coloured dots to give it almost a sparkling effect.

Looking at the photos again though, it almost looks a little unfinished. The top of the helmet is very undefined and it doesn't have the same orange "back-lighting" as the rest.

I'm not sure exactly who is responsible for the other pieces... the monkey might be Fredrock, and the girl might be Store, but I'll have to "check with my sources".

Yesterday, to paraphrase from Winnie-The-Pooh, was A Very Busy Day. Or, more accurately, A Very Busy Afternoon/Evening/Night.

It started with a Burger Theory lunch (always good), but with three trucks (four if you count the Jonny's Popcorn van parked around the corner) in Hindmarsh Square the place was stacked with people and service took a little while.

Then I had a meeting with H-San and the girly from my agency about some OHSW stuff, which was time consuming, but mostly painless (plus she brought good cupcakes from BTS).

I then did my usual walk home, made sure my car was still working (I hadn't used it in a couple of weeks, and after the last time it conked out on me I've been a little gun-shy as they say), got changed and headed out to These Walls Don't Lie Gallery for their "Take Away Sale" show... which was pretty much just a collection of pieces that hadn't sold in either their shows or shows in other galleries but had been marked down.

I picked up a piece by Dan Withey that was part of TWDL's 80's show, a black and white rendition of Beetle Juice. Very cool.

I also ran into an artist I used to know through Raury but haven't seen in years and years and years, so that was cool.

Then it was back to the car (that's the one thing I hate about TWDL... both times I've been I end up parking in the parklands and then walking up Unley Road to the gallery), a quick stop for the quickest and easiest dinner I could think of (a pie from the 24 hour bakery... which was better than the original idea of going for greasy fried things from the Red and White Café) then home to eat, then take a shower and head off to see Tink for Haircut Day!

It was a pretty standard Haircut Day... I didn't really pay much attention to what she was doing to my hair, we chatted about this, that and the other, compared photos on our iPhones (me of artwork purchased, her of Tink Jr's birthday cake), then chatted some more.

And then new hair (if not shockingly different from the last several haircuts).

Speaking of slightly unfinished... this guy really should have two pupils... right?

It's weird when someone you had a massive screaming match with in the office less than a fortnight buys you a "Gorgeous Gruesome Zombies" sewing kit because "they just had to".

I'm getting to that point when the hoarder in me is warring with the homemaker... in a perfect world I'd move somewhere else, but I keep having the thought that I should go through every single thing that I own and be ruthless about throwing away anything and everything that I have no need or use or attachment to. What I don't have currently is the time or the energy to do that. But it keeps praying on my mind.

I should also remember to pay more attention to the (nice) voices in my head... I walked past a photo opportunity this morning and thought "nah, that'll be fine, there will be plenty of other opportunities today"... and given that today's Photo A Day word is "shadow" and the rest of the day has been incredibly overcast... not so much.

I'm now officially convinced that I may be the only person doing gallery openings correctly...

Okay, that's not exactly true... although it feels kind of like it's true.

I went to the opening of Red Tomato Design's "I Have A Theme #2" at the Magazine Gallery. I'm not sure if it's actually a gallery show. I suppose it was, but it was slightly different given the fact that the artwork in question was on sweatshirts rather than paper or canvas.

I got there a little before the official opening time, but fortunately the gallery was open, so I wandered around inside, petted the adorable little sausage dog, wandered around some more...

Once opening time rolled around nobody seemed to be making any announcements... so I did my usual trip of approaching somebody in charge and asking what the deal was.

Which is why I'm now the proud owner of a Gary Seaman x Simon Pearce screen-printed sweatshirt.  It's not quite "one of a kind", although it was the only one in that particular size, and one of about seven (or eight) overall.

It's one of those things where it's so unique that I don't know if I would even want to wear it. But I'm also not sure that it will actually fit me. Which makes it a bit of a circular thought process... I don't know if I would wear it if I could wear it, but if I could then I'd have to decide of I would...

Anyway...

I also managed to get my hands on a teaser poster for the show earlier this week... I was on my way home on the bus and happened to glance out the window just at the right moment to notice the very distinctive Red Tomato face on an empty store front in North Adelaide... so I jumped off the bus and popped it off the wall.

Actually that was the second poster I popped off a wall this week... although I have the other one to one of the graphic designers at work because I thought it would appeal to her.

Oh, and I finally got my Metrocard from Adelaide Metro... on the same day that I got an email response from their Customer Service Team about my open letter blog post on Sunday. I honestly never wrote that thinking that anyone from Adelaide Metro would see that, let alone respond.

To be honest, I'm not sure I actually care about getting the response... the fact that you have to apologise for a bad customer service experience is never as effective as having a positive experience in the first place. But I suppose that it's nice somebody is paying attention.

I went on a little excursion today...

It was part last minute planning, part accident. The last minute plan was a decision to go to the "Gay Garage Sale and Art Show" at the Feast Festival Hub... and since I was going to be nearby, I took my camera so that I could snap some photos of street art I saw the other day.

The accident part came in when I tried to park the car, ended up heading down Waymouth Street... which I tend to do for some reason... and discovered that one of the spots that had previously been cleared of street art had a couple of great, huge new pieces on it (partly the golden face, partly the Benzo soldier... but it was way bigger than just those two parts).

That led to a little wandering around (not a ton, I was wearing thongs), checking out some old spots, and finding a few bits and pieces.

I'm not going to dignify the garage sale/art show with much commentary... it's enough to say that it was pitiful... and that "nuns" shouldn't be put in charge of a sausage sizzle (also, what the fuck is with trying to sell salad and fruit salad with a sausage sizzle... it's a sausage, in bread, potentially with onion... don't give me salad and don't put it on a plate, just give me bread and meat).

But fortunately the street art saved the day...

Dipping into the archives for today's Photo Friday.

I CANNOT wait to get my new glasses next week... my old ones are really, really, really, really annoying me... they sit at a slightly funny angle and I'm sure the masking tape keeps rubbing against my temple and giving me weird phantom tingles on the side of my head. Grrrr.

I also really need to take that holiday at the beginning of August... I'm getting somewhat snippier than usual... partly because other members of The Nut House have been either sick or otherwise absent on and off for the last couple of weeks and there are a bunch of new things on the horizon that I'm unsure of, so my annoyance level is fairly high.

Whether a week off will help or not, only time will tell. Can't hurt though, right?

You remember how I said I was supposed to run my car around during the week? Yeah, not so much... did it Saturday, did it Sunday... couldn't be arsed doing it for the rest of the week. Fingers crossed it starts tomorrow morning since I have to meet Ma at the shops so she can drop her car off at the mechanic.

I was hoping to head to the zoo tomorrow... they're having an "animal enrichment day" which seemed like it would be rife with photo opportunities, but since Ma is putting her car in and the weather seems indecisive, I'm not sure that plan is going to come together.

On the up side that may mean we can visit the Burger Theory truck again instead on Leigh Street... woohoo...

And now it's time for quiche...

unplanned city street art adventure

simple lines - possibly by store tavistock
What started out as a plan to take myself out for breakfast followed by a trip to buy something in the storage oeuvre turned, instead, into a distinct lack of either of those things and, as the pictures would suggest, a mini street art safari.

I did actually take myself to Melbourne Street (where I have two vouchers for two different cafes) but they both looked kinda busy and to be honest I was a little intimidated about going into either of them to eat alone. Normally I don't have a problem with that, and I did have a bag full of Collect magazine, iPhone and headphones, but even so it just felt weird, so after wandering up and down the street I gave up and went back to the car.

I'd planned on heading down to Arndale to see if I could find a suitable "toy box" (and yes, the quotes are there for exactly the reason you think they are... those kinda toys), but since I was already that close to the city I figured I would swing around the long way, snap some photos of the street art we discovered yesterday and be on my way.

Best laid plans of mice and men, as they say.

I really need to start carrying some 10c and 20c pieces in the car for parking though... if I'd originally planned to head that way I would have stuck some in my pocket, but as I was flying by the seat of my pants I didn't... in fact I was completely without change having not spent any money by that point.

And sadly, since they cancelled the Rundle Street Markets on a Sunday the car park is no longer free... although $4 for the whole day is pretty good.

When I hit Rundle Street I actually wandered off the wrong way down to Cocolat to get a hot chocolate (m'eh... hot, but I've had better) and then wandered along Rundle Street slowly swigging away on it.

I felt very boho hipster actually when I made it up to where the street art was... I still had some chocolate left and was taking photos with one hand and swigging away with the other. Completely pretentious, although slightly less so because it only looked like a giant coffee.

Although the Rundle Street Markets are no longer there, a number of the stallholders got together and decided to move the whole thing over to Hindmarsh Square, so I wandered over to see what was going on... and I have to say, it all felt decidedly low-rent. Actually, it just felt like some sort of school fete (okay, the stuff people was selling wasn't that bad, but there was a very fete kind of vibe to the whole thing)... needless to say, I didn't stay very long, just did one lap and then legged it.

Since Ma and I wandered around Rundle Mall yesterday, I wasn't really in the mood to do it again today, so I called it quits and wandered back to the car park, detouring for some street art on the way (that's where the Tavistock Lane picture comes in).

Thinking about it, today really came down to my routes from Point A to Point B... I was already in Melbourne St, so the city was closer... from Rundle St I figured I would detour around and head off to Arndale via the Morphett Street Bridge...

On my way through the city I realised that I wanted to stop off and actually photograph the Morphett Street Bridge thanks to this...

However, I know it's always a pain in the ass to find a park around that neck of the woods, doubly so without the aforementioned coinage, so I ended up doing a couple of laps and was driving past the Grace Emily when I saw the Be Free girl at the top of this post, and decided to just park there.

That meant I had to wander through the backstreets to get to the bridge and instead of going the more direct way I figured I would swing past the car park behind Higher Ground on the off chance there was any new street art.

As I was walking down the side street, I noticed the piece at the end seemed to be new, or at least I didn't really remember it... and as I got closer I realised it was really, really, really new... as in it was still being painted!

When I got closer I looked at the guy doing the work (I was directly behind him, so I couldn't see his face) and had the strangest feeling that it was Benzo... but figured it couldn't be because last I heard he was overseas.

He finally turned around and it was Benzo! He also remembered me (even though we've only met twice... and I'm sure I came across as a total fanboy geek the first time), shook my hand, and stopped to chat for a bit.

Part of me wonders if it's just because he's nice... or whether he partially remembers me from the first time we met, but the other two times he knows he knows me, but can't exactly place me. That right there is what you call Low Self Esteem ladies and gentlemen!

Anyway, we had a slightly surreal chat (surreal for me anyway... and not helped by what I'm guessing were TAFE students doing a fashion shoot in the background and being all half dressed girls and whatnot), then I wandered off towards the bridge.

And the bridge is actually more impressive than I thought it was going to be... although impossible to photograph all at once, and I think I'll have to slap my panorama program into shape before it will do what I want it to do (maybe I just need to stitch the photos together one at a time). It's also there the ampersand at the top of the post came from... and given that I do have a little bit of a thing about ampersands (if I had the room I'd probably collect them), I made sure I got some good shots of it.

Then after a quick detour on the way back where I discovered the whole side of a two story building covered in what I think is a very minimal Store design (that's the white cloud tentacle thing at the top) and a very bright and colourful unfinished piece, I wandered back to the car and called it a day...

But what with editing all the images, creating a bunch of posts for later and writing this up, I seem to have lost a big chunk of the afternoon/evening.
